Chapter 5: Javier’s Point of View
“Don’t come near him!” A voice came that made me open my eyes wide and shot me out of sleep. “If you will just scold him!”
“I can do whatever I want to do!” There, my father’s voice rang through the hallway before the door of my room burst open.
My eyes wandered on the wall in the first seconds before they landed on my father’s furious face. I raised one brow at him and waited for him to say whatever he wanted to say.
“Oh, you’re awake,” the Alpha snapped and walked towards the bed. “I am glad you are awake because we have something to talk about, Javier!”
“Jhared!” My mother, Monica, exclaimed and held his arm. “Just let my son rest, please!”
“Rest?” He faced my mother. “After all the humiliation and indifference he showed upon the pack, he has the right to rest? Have you ever found yourself looking at me and thought: Oh! My husband hasn’t gotten enough rest yet because my stupid son is now wounded since he couldn’t even protect himself and sent more humiliation to us who rule! ”
He pointed at me as if I were the most disgusting artifact his bloodline has ever made. I wet my lips as the words tugged at something deep in my chest.
“If you favored Liam to be the next Alpha,” Monica said. “Then that’s on you! But Javier has been chosen by Hecti! He will rule the pack regardless of the distaste you gentlemen have shown my son! I see my sons equally; whether it is Javier or Liam in the said prophecy, I would never discriminate against the other one!”
Alpha Jhared held my mother’s arm. “You still don’t get it, do you?” he asked. If his tone was a poison, he has already killed my mother. “Firstly, the pack favored your son, Liam, to be the next Alpha! Secondly, this little wounded bastard has no right to rule—look at him!”
Gradually, Monica looked in my direction before she decided to look down. I just laid down on my sheets, tolerating all the words my father had thrown. As if I have something to defend myself with.
My father’s right, after all.
“Have you ever thought about the possible alliances we could have if it was Liam in the prophecy?” he pried. “Liam is known to this land! Javier isn’t! Once the other packs hear that the future Alpha was attacked and couldn’t even defend himself, what do you think they’ll think of us? That our pack is weak, just like our Alpha?”
She avoided his eyes. “For sure, Goddess Hecti has her reasons,” she mumbled before raising her chin to look up at Jhared. “Why are you doubting the goddess in the first place? She chose Javier for a reason!”
“It’s not about doubting the goddess,” Jhared said firmly. “It is about knowing the truth, that Liam is more deserving of the role! Liam worked himself hard throughout his life as he prepared for the prophecy because everyone in the pack, especially the Councils, predicted that he’d be the next Alpha, not this…” My father looked at me again, but this time, his eyes were poking loathsome comments at me.
I stayed silent, even if I have a lot of things to say. But I don’t want to hurt my mother’s feelings if I side with my father’s harsh remarks about me.
“Are you just going to listen and not defend yourself anymore?” he growled.
I didn’t reply. I just averted my eyes far away from him, trying to find the smartest thing to say.
It never came.
“See!” he snapped again. “He couldn’t even defend himself! He couldn’t protect! He couldn’t stand for himself! If Sean wasn’t there to help him last night, he’d probably be dead.”
I pulled myself into a sitting position. Both of them paused and stared at me. Gradually, my eyes met theirs before I pushed myself off the bed to stand up.
“Father…” I muttered as I took steps toward him. He just stood there, with an unreadable look on his face. But I heard how his blood boiled. Maybe because he couldn’t stomach the fact that I could actually stand on him. Or maybe he’s terrified of the possibility that I could fight back.
I wouldn’t be chosen to be an Alpha for nothing.
“I…” I muttered as I took more steps. “… will never be your pack’s Alpha. Make Liam the Alpha instead—everyone wants him, not me.”
My eyes gradually, wide and unblinking, met my father’s eyes without flinching. My mother’s soft hands held my arm to stop me from coming closer. I took a swift glance in her direction to give her reassurance I wasn’t going to start a fight.
“That came from you,” he growled back as he straightened his back, mockery written all over his face. “Not from me…”
“Because I have no choice to say so,” I answered back, slightly feeling the blood gushing out from my fresh wounds. “I will decline the role even if it’ll cost me to get thrown out by the Moon Goddess.”
“Javier!” Monica exclaimed. “Don’t say that!”
I glanced at my mother. “We can’t force someone to accept us as the Alpha if they can’t even accept us as their son,” I said before glancing back at Jhared.
His face was emotionless this time, but I know, he was just hiding his own emotions at the moment.
I heard his body reacting. So loud I could laugh at him for the projection he was doing.
He was afraid.
I know that he was afraid.
“Forget about me being your son,” I told him and spread a knowing but pained smile on him. “I know well enough that to you, I am nothing but a burden—an embarrassment to the pack.”
Before my father could say something about what I said, I stormed out of the room. I heard my mother’s outcry from my room, but I did not dare to look back.
That’s enough. I heard enough.
I felt the stares at my back, but I did not bother to check who they were. Blood stained on my chest, I continued walking until I reached the hidden portal. For a second, I took a glance from my back to check if someone followed me.
The scene was clear.
I took a deep breath before coming inside it.
_
There, I saw Celine, clutching that little box with some voice coming from it. Hurriedly, she came out from her unit while trying to wear her sandals.
She’s leaving.
“Aren’t you going to follow her out?“The wolf inside me growled.
I shook my head. “Let me just have her whole place so I can rest while she’s away,” I said. “We still have something to talk about when she comes back.”
