CHAPTER 1

The ballroom of the Celestial Palace Hotel was bathed in golden light, the air thick with the scent of expensive cologne, fine champagne, and whispered conversations between the elite. Towering crystal chandeliers cascaded from the high ceilings, their light refracting into dazzling patterns across the polished marble floors and casting a soft glow over men in tailored suits and women draped in designer gowns. The vast expanse of the hall was framed by towering floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a panoramic view of the ocean beyond, where the horizon melted into the sky. The walls were adorned with sleek, gilded paneling, seamlessly blending contemporary aesthetics with regal sophistication. Soft golden hues complemented the deep, rich mahogany furnishings, while intricate carvings and custom-designed motifs added an air of exclusivity. A sweeping grand staircase with an ornate glass railing curved down from the upper level, making for an entrance fit for royalty—one Piper Callista Sinclaire knew how to command. At the heart of the hall, a massive, sculpted fountain stood as a centerpiece, its cascading waters glistening under the ambient lighting. Luxurious velvet seating arrangements, positioned with precision, invited guests to relax while soaking in the hall’s grandeur. The scent of fresh lilies and roses, meticulously arranged by the best florists, lingered in the air, adding to the intoxicating allure of the space. Every detail, from the handcrafted crystal tableware to the subtle yet mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, spoke of power, prestige, and Piper’s unyielding empire. This was more than just a grand hall—it was a modern palace, and Piper was its reigning queen. An event where power and influence intermingled, where alliances were made with a handshake, and where Piper Callista Sinclaire thrived. Standing near the entrance, she exuded effortless confidence in a black satin gown that hugged her curves, its thigh-high slit revealing just enough to command attention. Her long, wavy hair cascaded down her back, and her crimson lips curled into the kind of smirk that made men nervous and women envious. She wasn’t here to make friends. She was here to dominate. “Miss Sinclaire, your presence is always a pleasure.” An older businessman, one of the event sponsors, greeted her with a respectful nod. “Of course, it is,” she replied smoothly, accepting a flute of champagne from a passing waiter. “How’s the expansion project going?” He launched into details, eager to impress her. Piper listened, her sharp mind already calculating figures and potential investments, but she wasn’t entirely focused. There was an energy in the room tonight, something different. A presence. And she felt it before she even turned to look. Across the ballroom, standing near the VIP section, was a man who commanded attention without even trying. Sebastian Blackwood Alpha of the Imperial Eclipse Pack. A Business tycoon. The kind of man whose mere presence made people stand straighter, speak more carefully. Piper had heard of him before, of course. His name carried weight in both human and supernatural circles. Ruthless, calculating, untouchable. And yet, none of those descriptions did justice to the man standing before her now. Tall, broad-shouldered, and effortlessly powerful, he wore a black suit that fit him too well, his sharp jawline accentuated by the dim lighting. His presence was magnetic, dark, dangerous. Their eyes met. A flicker of something unfamiliar passed through her, like a whisper against her skin. And then, just as quickly, something—or someone—interrupted. A tiny girl with big, curious eyes came barreling toward her, clutching a stuffed wolf in her hands. Piper barely had time to react before the child latched onto her leg, staring up at her with unshakable determination. “Mama!” The room went silent. Piper froze. And from across the room, Sebastian’s golden eyes darkened, his gaze locking onto hers with the intensity of a man who had just found something he wasn’t prepared for. The weight of the child’s small hands on Piper’s leg sent a shock through her system. Did she just— Piper blinked down at the little girl, her brain scrambling for an explanation. The child, no older than six, clung to her as if she had found something or someone she had been searching for. The room was silent, the hushed murmurs of the crowd filled with curiosity and amusement. High-society events thrived on drama, and this? This was a scandal waiting to happen. “I—” Piper hesitated, completely thrown off guard. “Sweetheart, I think you—” Before she could finish, heavy footsteps approached. Sebastian. He moved through the crowd like a predator stalking its prey—slow, controlled, powerful. His golden eyes were locked onto her, darkened with something unreadable. It wasn’t anger. It wasn’t amusement. It was something deeper. Piper didn’t like it. But what she liked even less was the way his presence made the air around her thicker, the way her heart betrayed her, hammering in her chest like a war drum. “Brianna.” His voice was deep, rich, commanding. The kind that made people listen. The little girl name Brianna just pouted but didn’t let go. “Daddy, it’s her. It’s really her.” Piper swallowed hard, placing a hand on the child’s shoulder and lowering herself slightly. “Sweetheart, I think you’re confused. I’m not—” “No, you are,” Brianna insisted, her big, hopeful eyes shimmering under the chandelier light. “You’re my new mama. The Moon Goddess sent you.” Piper froze. What?! What the hell?! The whispers in the room grew louder. People watched with barely concealed interest, eager to see how this scene would unfold. Sebastian sighed, rubbing a hand down his face before crouching beside his daughter. “Bri, we talked about this.” His voice was softer now, patient but firm. “You can’t just decide—” “But you said second-chance mates exist,” Brianna argued, determined. “And I felt it. It’s her, Daddy. I know it.” Piper’s lips parted, but no words came out. What was she supposed to say? That she wasn’t a werewolf? That the Moon Goddess had nothing to do with her? That she was just a businesswoman who had zero plans of being some Alpha’s mate, let alone a mother to his child? No. No, this was not happening She needed to get out of here. Piper gently pried Brianna’s hands off her leg and straightened. “It’s been a long night,” she said smoothly, masking her internal panic with an easy smile. “I think she’s just overwhelmed.” Sebastian rose as well, his towering form making her feel impossibly small. “Perhaps.” But his gaze never left her, studying her, assessing her, as if trying to solve a puzzle he didn’t know he had been given. A part of her wanted to glare at him. What the hell are you looking at? But the other part—the part that was unnerved by this entire situation—told her to retreat. Fast. “I should go,” Piper said, reaching for her clutch. “It was… interesting meeting you both.” She turned, but before she could take a step “I’ll see you again,” Sebastian said, his voice a quiet promise. Piper paused, her spine stiffening, but she didn’t look back. She didn’t need to. Because deep down, she knew he was right. And that terrified her more than anything else.
