Jason had no idea how he got home. Standing at the foot of the apartment building, he looked up and saw that the window was dark and unlit. When Serena used to be home, she always left the entryway light on for him. But it was off now, and it would never be on again. He climbed the stairs and unlocked the door. The pair of matching couple slippers still sat side by side at the entrance. The seat on the sofa that Serena always used still held a faint indent. When Jason closed his eyes, he could almost see Serena sitting there, furrowing her brow as she read. Every corner of the house still held her. Yet he had lost her. He remembered the first time he'd seen her, at the university library. He stood hidden behind the bookshelf, watching Serena for a long time before he finally worked
