Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it - Haruki Murakami
"Patience, be patient you've got this" Sibel repeated to herself for what felt like the thousandth time. Her legs were cramping up from squatting for too long. She was covered in sweat and exhaustion was only a thought away. Sibel was worried that she would give herself away if this dragged much longer. She tilted her head to the side and leaned against the wall. She had chosen the biggest wooden crate that she could find with a clear line of sight to the office booth.
Sibel had snuck in earlier when she knew the guards would be changing shifts. She had left a wicker of drinks and biscuits for the current guard with a thank you note at the place where he would clock in for his shift. She was hoping that the man, Jax , from the ID hanging from his neck would take the bait.
Two hours later, Jax nibbled away on another biscuit from the wicker while reaching for the third bottle of non-alcoholic cider. Sibel was getting impatient, this was taking longer than expected and the longer she was here the more she risked exposure. Her plan was not working and she was running out of time. Just when Sibel could feel the first signs of panic, the guard downed the third bottle and got up from his seat with a groan to head to the bathroom.
Sibel waited for the sound of his footsteps to fade before dashing for the small office on the back end of the warehouse floor. The warehouse was a low-security storage depot where building materials from outside the city were stored for the enforcers to inspect before they were distributed out. Sibel had chosen this place for two reasons, her best friend Axel had confirmed that there was only one guard every night and the shift timings were regular. After all who would break in to steal crates weighing over a 100kgs each of raw materials from a building routinely visited by the enforcers. Good thing that Sibel was here for something entirely different.
As she made her way to the office, Sibel instantly reached for the shipment delivery details. She skimmed through the page until she found the next delivery expected from the city of Mirel. Sibel quickly noted the date and time of the expected delivery and carefully placed the document back as she found it. She took a deep breath and listened for any signs of the guard before she quietly opened the office door and looked out.
There was no one in sight.
Sibel sighed in relief and made her way past the wooden crate she had been hiding behind, to the opposite end of the warehouse where the exit was. She was sure to keep her feet light and listen for any signs of the guard. She was almost to the exit when she heard footsteps getting louder. Sibel's heart started hammering in her chest and a bead of sweat was making it's way down the back of her neck. She knew that she would have to kill the guard quickly if he noticed her which would alert the enforcers to her plan of escape. Getting caught was not an option either because it would mean that she was handling herself over to the enforcers on a silver platter. Although Sibel never doubted her strength, she knew that once caught the enforcers would eventually get her to spill Axel's whereabouts and her best friend would die.
The exit was completely exposed, Sibel knew this was the only way out and she had to take the risk. She waited for the guard to reach the office door and waited for him to turn his back on her. The moment the guard turned to push the office door open, Sibel made her way quietly to the door and slipped through.
The cool night air was a slap to her face after being in the stuffy warehouse for the past few hours. She started walking down the street and breathed in deep. She wondered how her life could have changed so much in a few days. Anger welled up inside her as she remembered the betrayal and deceit that started this whole thing. She shook her head to dispel the anger, knowing that now was not the time to reminisce. She would have time later, after she got Axel out of this city safely.
She had all the time to get her revenge and she would make the bastards pay for what they did.
