Chapter 22 AT SEVEN ON THE DOT, Lula waltzes through the diner door, ready for her morning shift. Beaming at Cate, she asks, “How’d it go last night?” “Fine,” Cate says with a shrug. “Nothing special to report.” There's a trucker shaking his coffee cup at her and a couple of early risers asking for more maple syrup. Their pancakes are already drenched in the stuff, for goodness' sake! The family in the front booth wants more blueberry jam, not to mention more toast. Table five needs more cream. Cate's got plenty on her plate. “I’ll take over,” Lula says. “You can skedaddle.” “It’s okay,” Cate tells her boss. “I can stick around for a couple minutes, at least until the rush dies down.” Lula gives her a knowing look.
