Chapter 24 FALLING, FALLING, BUT not back in time. Cate falls forward and lands with her face in a cluster of pine needles. She's never been so thankful to have the earth beneath her. She attempts to raise her head from the forest floor, but her cranium weighs her down. Pine needles stick to her wet hair. It’s almost laughable. Her bones ache, but she doesn’t mind. She doesn’t mind if she’s bruised from her chin to her chest. She’s happy to be alive, happy to feel the ground beneath her body, the tree root under her hip. Except, no, that's not a tree root.
