‘All right, all right,’ yelled my father, adding some choice words in the North Kras dialect as he thumped downstairs. ‘What?’ Then his voice dropped, and I couldn’t make out the words anymore. A moment later he came back upstairs. ‘Mousie? Someone downstairs says it’s an emergency with your friend Pace. She says please hurry and get dressed.’
I stood up. ‘Thanks, Dad. Who is it?’
‘Dr … um … Maher, I think she said.’

‘Could you please tell her I’ll be ready in a minute?’
‘Sure, Mousie. Hey—are you going to be all right? This is all getting a little scary.’
