11 Celeste Re-emerges I began to go uphill, and the tunnel got dirtier and rougher and narrower. The concrete floor turned to gravel and dirt, and then to mud. Soon I was on my hands and knees, trying to keep my backpack from scraping too badly against the roof, and pushing my gym bag across the mud ahead of me. I was nearly at the point of having to crawl on my stomach when I noticed daylight. The tunnel sloped upward sharply, and I looked up to see a hole framed with reeds. Pushing my head and shoulders past my gym bag, I stuck my head up and had a cautious look around. I couldn’t see anyone. I reached up and pushed the gym bag onto a clump of reeds I could reach through the entrance, then my backpack. Finally, I scrabbled up. I was covered in mud. I was glad I had some extra clothes
