Chapter 5: Ashes and Echoes

845 Words
NICHOLAS The private jet touched down in the isolated, mist-shrouded valley just as the heavy midnight fog began to creep over the ruined earth. Nicholas didn’t wait for a car; he tore through the dense treeline on foot, his incredible speed turning the dark forest into a dizzying blur of towering pines and pale moonlight. Every single stride carried him faster, his lungs burning with an anticipation that bordered on absolute agony, driving him relentlessly forward through the chilling dampness of the night air. When he finally broke through the heavy tree line and stepped into the open clearing, the breath caught sharply in his throat. Where Cathy’s secluded wooden cottage had once stood—a quiet sanctuary tucked away in the deep, isolated woods—there was now only a jagged scar of blackened earth and smoldering timbers. The ancient forest around the ruin was completely silent, entirely devoid of wildlife, as if even the insects and birds had fled the lingering terror of what had transpired here hours before. As Nicholas stepped onto the ash-covered ground, his eyes flared a brilliant, terrifying crimson, piercing straight through the surrounding darkness. He dropped quickly to one knee, sinking his gloved fingers into the warm, powdery soot. He closed his eyes, drawing in a slow, calculated breath, forcing his heightened senses to sift through the thick residual atmosphere. Instantly, the recent history of the night brushed against his awareness. He smelled the sharp, acrid scent of scorched timber, melting stone, and the heavy chemical and spiritual residue of a powerful, destructive magical fire. But there was no lingering signature, no distinct energetic fingerprint to indicate who had cast the spell. To his heightened senses, it appeared as a devastating, hostile attack—a ruthless, calculated strike by the dark underworld factions or rogue covens he had always feared would target Anna to get to him. A cold wave of dread gripped his chest, tighter than any physical constraint he had ever known. For three centuries, he had lived as a creature of absolute control, untouched by true fear or vulnerability. But the thought of losing Anna forever because of his own cruel rejection shattered his composure entirely. He had pushed her away so she could finally live and to shield her from the shadows that surrounded him, and now, instead of protecting her, he might have delivered her straight into the hands of her executioners. Desperate, with a frantic urgency that defied centuries of stoicism, Nicholas ripped his satellite phone from his coat pocket and dialed Damian’s encrypted number. It rang once before a tense, hurried voice answered from the other end. „Nicholas? Have you reached the site?“ Damian asked, his tone laced with acute anxiety. “I am standing in the middle of the burn,“ Nicholas snarled, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate edge that made Damian fall instantly silent. „The place has been leveled by powerful magic. There are no bodies, but there are no clear traces either. Talk to me, Damian—tell me you have found something. Anything!“ “I’m still running down every loose thread on this end, Nicholas,“ Damian replied, the sound of rapid digital typing echoing sharply through the line. „Local informants are completely dry, and the commercial travel logs are heavily scrambled. I’m tearing through every underground network to piece it together, but someone high up is actively masking their trail.“ “Dig deeper!” Nicholas roared, his voice echoing through the dark, silent forest like rolling thunder. „Scrape every black market, every rogue coven, every hidden port on this entire continent! I don’t care what it takes, Damian. Find them. Find her!“ He cut the call abruptly, his hand shaking so violently he nearly crushed the titanium device in his grip. Beneath the suffocating panic clawing at his chest, he clung desperately to the only anchor left: the latent, unseen thread of their soul-bond, stretching westward into the dark expanse of the country. Though their bond had never been fully consummated, it was still woven deep enough within their blood and fates that he would have felt it instantly—his own body would have convulsed and broken apart—if her life had been extinguished. She was alive. But she was out there somewhere, swallowed by the vast, modern world, entirely unprotected and terrified. Nicholas stood up slowly, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached, his eyes burning with an absolute, unyielding resolve. Blinded by sudden fury, he lashed out, slamming his heavy fist straight into the trunk of a massive, ancient pine beside him. With a deafening crack of splintering wood, a large chunk exploded outward into the night air, raining splinters and sap across the ash. He would tear the world apart brick by brick, burn down every coven to ash, and wage unholy war against the entire underworld if he had to. He was going to find her, no matter the cost, and heaven help anyone to stand in his way.
