Chapter 5: Ashes and Echoes

691 Words
The private jet touched down in the isolated, mist-shrouded valley just as the midnight fog began to creep over the ruined earth. Nicholas didn't wait for a car; he tore through the dense treeline on foot, his immortal speed turning the forest into a blur of dark pines and pale moonlight. When he finally broke through the clearing, the breath caught in his throat—though he hadn't needed to breathe in centuries. Where Cathy’s quaint wooden cottage had once stood, there was now only a jagged scar of blackened earth and smoldering timbers. The forest around the ruin was eerily silent, devoid of even the nocturnal chatter of wildlife. As Nicholas stepped onto the ash-covered ground, his eyes flared a brilliant, luminescent crimson, piercing straight through the darkness. He dropped to one knee, sinking his gloved fingers into the warm, powdery soot. He closed his eyes, drawing in a slow, deep breath, forcing his heightened senses to sift through the residual layers of the atmosphere. Instantly, the violent history of the night brushed against his awareness. He smelled the sharp, acrid scent of scorched timber and the heavy, intricate chemical and spiritual residue of a powerful, volatile magical fire. But there was no lingering signature—nothing that told him who had cast the spell. To his heightened senses, it looked like a devastating, hostile attack. A ruthless strike by the dark underworld factions or rogue covens he had always feared would target Anna. The terrifying thought gripped his immortal heart with a suffocating, clawing panic. No. Not her. A cold, agonizing wave of terror crashed over him, stealing the strength from his limbs. For two hundred years, he had lived as a creature of shadow and control, untouched by true fear. But the thought of losing Anna—of a world where her bright, fierce spirit was extinguished forever because of his cruel rejection—shattered his composure entirely. He could not lose her. The mere concept tore at the very fabric of his existence. He had pushed her away to keep her safe, and now, instead of shielding her, he might have delivered her straight to the executioner. Desperate, trembling with a frantic urgency that defied centuries of stoicism, Nicholas ripped his satellite phone from his coat pocket and dialed Damian's encrypted number. It rang once before a tense voice answered. "Nicholas? Have you reached the site?" Damian asked, his tone laced with acute anxiety. "I am standing in the middle of the burn," Nicholas snarled, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate edge that made Damian fall dead silent on the other end. "The place has been leveled by very powerful magic. There are no bodies, but there are no clear traces either. Talk to me, Damian—tell me you have found something. Anything!" "I'm still running down every loose thread on this end, sir," Damian replied, the sound of rapid digital typing echoing through the line. "Local informants are dry, and the travel logs are heavily scrambled. I'm tearing through every underground network—" "Dig deeper!" Nicholas roared, his voice echoing through the dark, silent forest. "Scrape every black market, every rogue coven, every port on this continent! I don't care what it takes, Damian. Find them. Find her!" He cut the call, his hand shaking so violently he nearly crushed the titanium device to dust. Deep down, beneath the suffocating panic clawing at his chest, he clung desperately to the only anchor left in the dark: the faint, invisible thread of their soul-bond, stretching faintly toward the west. She was alive—his body would have broken into a million pieces if the tether had snapped. She was out there, swallowed by the vast, modern world, entirely unprotected. Nicholas stood up, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached, his eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute resolve. He would tear the world apart, burn down every coven, and wage war against the entire underworld if he had to. He was going to find her, no matter the cost.
