The library had become their battlefield. Kurt arrived early again, his notes aligned like soldiers ready for inspection. Selene appeared moments later, balancing a coffee cup and a stack of papers that looked more like a scrapbook than an accounting project. “Do you ever relax?” she teased, sliding into the chair across from him. “Relaxation doesn’t solve equations,” Kurt replied, though his eyes flicked to the caramel swirl dripping down her cup. Selene grinned. “Maybe not. But it makes the work sweeter.” They dove into their assignment, Kurt insisting on formulas while Selene added anecdotes about the businesses they studied. At first, Kurt dismissed her approach as unnecessary. Yet, as she explained how a struggling bakery’s numbers reflected sacrifice and resilience, he found himself listening. For the first time, the figures seemed less sterile. Hours passed, and their arguments softened into laughter. Selene’s energy chipped away at Kurt’s reserve, while his quiet steadiness grounded her enthusiasm. When she leaned over his notebook to correct a miscalculation, their shoulders brushed. Kurt stiffened, but Selene only smiled. “See? Even you make mistakes,” she whispered. Kurt looked at her, unsettled. Numbers were predictable. Selene was not. And that unpredictability was beginning to matter.
