Chapter 3: Debit, Credit Confession

215 Words
The project deadline loomed closer, and Kurt and Selene found themselves spending more evenings in the library. What had started as tense sessions now carried a rhythm — her laughter filling the silence, his quiet focus steadying her energy. One night, Selene leaned over the table, her hair falling across her notebook as she explained a case study. Kurt watched her, distracted by the way she spoke with conviction, as if every number carried a heartbeat. He quickly looked away, embarrassed by the warmth creeping into his chest. “You’re staring,” Selene said, teasing but gentle. Kurt cleared his throat. “I was… checking your calculations.” Selene smirked. “Sure you were.” Their shoulders brushed again, and this time Kurt didn’t pull back. Instead, he felt the strange comfort of her presence. Selene noticed, her smile softening. “You know, Kurt, you’re not as cold as you pretend to be.” He wanted to argue, but the words wouldn’t come. For the first time, Kurt realized that Selene wasn’t just unbalancing his numbers — she was rewriting them. As they packed up for the night, Selene whispered, “Maybe some equations aren’t meant to be solved. Maybe they’re meant to be felt.” Kurt’s heart skipped. And he knew she was right.
