Chapter 1: Balancing Sheets, Unbalancing Hearts

202 Words
Kurt Mendoza believed numbers were the only things that never betrayed him. Precise, predictable, and safe — unlike people. On the first day of advanced accountancy, his professor announced a semester‑long project in pairs. Kurt’s heart sank when his name was linked with Selene Ramirez. Selene was everything Kurt wasn’t: lively, creative, and unafraid to see stories behind the numbers. Her notebooks were decorated with doodles, her laughter carried across the hallways, and she treated accounting like art. To Kurt, that was chaos. Their first meeting in the library was tense. Kurt arrived early, his materials neatly stacked. Selene breezed in late, coffee in hand, smiling as if deadlines were suggestions. “Numbers make more sense with caffeine,” she teased. Kurt replied flatly, “Numbers make sense regardless.” As they worked, Kurt insisted on precision while Selene argued for context. Their debates grew heated, but beneath the clash was curiosity. Kurt found himself noticing her spark; Selene saw the quiet passion behind his seriousness. By the end of the session, Kurt realized his fortress of numbers had a c***k. Selene had unsettled his balance, and for the first time, he wondered if the heart had its own equation.
