“Are London banks still strong? How worried should we be?” Natalie’s mother asks, shifting her focus again and this time landing on me. “Naturally, and our bank for certain. No worries, of course, but the bigger picture is something else. International, I mean,” says the Baroness. “I’m at ease knowing you have it under control,” Natalie’s mother says. “She runs a bank?” I ask Natalie. “Yes, well, sort of. She’s the chief legal advisor at the Bank of England. There’s been talk of her succeeding the Governor of the bank. She’s very high-ranking, and it just doesn’t fit that she’s here. Not for Molly.
