“Call an ambulance. One of our guests had an accident in the kitchen.” She hangs up. To her husband, she says: “Pour some water on the floor near his feet. He slipped and hit his head there on the corner of the counter.” A shoe’s sole twists on the floor’s stone, followed soon after that by the clink of a glass hitting metal, then the quick on and off of the kitchen faucet. Next, the water gets dumped near my feet and legs. I feel it seep through the shin area of my pants leg and through the toes of my shoes. As I lay there on the floor feeling the water slowly crawl its way up towards my knee, I wonder if this entire party was one gigantic ruse to get rid of me.
