Chapter 43
Clay had climbed out of his fighter and was lowering himself to the floor when the door of the small hangar slid open to reveal Jess. Clay was struck by just how young Jess looked as he stood there, clearly uncertain.
“Ummm… I guess I should say welcome to the Wanderer,” Jess said. “I’m not really used to having visitors, at least not in this section. I use drones or one of the robots to welcome the refugees.”
Clay started to close the distance, moving slowly because Jess looked jumpy and Clay was pretty certain the Wanderer was capable of defending him.
“I guess these are the most stressful circumstances you’ve had to welcome someone to the ship under,” Clay replied, reaching Jess and stopping. “Thanks for saving me.”
Jess laughed, much of the tension going out of him.
