Chapter Six: The Wolf Within

1620 Words
Thelma's POV The next morning came faster than I'd expected. I'd barely slept, my mind racing with questions about Xavier and what his cryptic words had meant. Who says I was playing along? The phrase echoed in my head like a haunting melody. I was getting dressed when I felt it...a strange tingling sensation at the back of my neck, followed by a voice that definitely wasn't my own. "Finally, you're awake." I spun around, my heart hammering. Who's there? The room was empty, but the voice came again, clearer this time, and it was coming from inside my head. "I'm Thalia, your wolf. And we need to talk." I stumbled backward, nearly falling onto my bed. "That's impossible. I've never had a wolf. I'm 23—if I had one, she would have manifested years ago!" "Oh, sweet child, I've been here all along. They've been suppressing me."* "They?" I whispered, though I already suspected the answer. Your so-called parents. The poison they've been giving you wasn't just meant to kill you—it was designed to keep me dormant. But death broke the spell, and now that you're reborn, I'm finally free. The revelation hit me like a physical blow. I sank onto my bed, trying to process this new information. "How long have you known?" Everything. I felt your pain, your betrayal, your death. I've been fighting to reach you for years, but the poison was too strong. That's why you never found your true mate before—I was the one meant to recognize him. "Xavier," I breathed. Yes. He's our mate, Thelma. Not because of some desperate claim you made last night, but because it's written in our very souls. I can feel his wolf calling to us. Before I could respond, there was a sharp knock on my door. "Thelma!" It was Yvonne, and she sounded panicked. "Dad wants to see you immediately. Xavier's representatives are here, and they're asking questions about... about things they shouldn't know." I opened the door to find Yvonne pacing frantically in the hallway, her usually perfect appearance disheveled. "What kind of questions?" I asked, though Thalia was already whispering the answer in my mind. They know about your real parents. Xavier didn't come here by accident—he's been investigating their murder."* Yvonne grabbed my arm. "They're asking about the old Tee pack, about what happened to the original alpha family. Thelma, how could they possibly know about that? We buried that secret years ago!" I stared at her, and for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes. Not the calculated manipulation she usually displayed, but raw, desperate terror. "Maybe because some secrets refuse to stay buried," I said quietly. She searched my face, and I saw the exact moment she realized something had changed about me. "You... you're different. Your eyes, they're..." She stepped back. "You have a wolf." I smiled, and I knew it wasn't the sweet, naive smile she was used to. This one had teeth. "Yes, I do. Her name is Thalia, and she's been waiting a very long time to meet you." Yvonne's face went white. "That's impossible. The poison should have—" She cut herself off, but it was too late. "Should have what, sister?" I asked, taking a step toward her. "Should have kept suppressing my wolf? Should have kept me weak and controllable?" She's terrified,Thalia purred in my mind. She can sense my power. I'm much stronger than she expected. "I don't know what you're talking about," Yvonne stammered, but her voice lacked conviction. "Don't you?" I tilted my head. "Then let me refresh your memory. The poison wasn't just meant to kill me during the ambush, was it? It was a long-term plan. Years of small doses, keeping my wolf dormant, making sure I'd never be strong enough to claim my rightful place or discover the truth about my real parents." Tears were streaming down her face now. "Thelma, please, you have to understand—" "I understand perfectly." I moved closer, and I could feel Thalia's power radiating through me. "I understand that you've been poisoning me since childhood. I understand that you murdered my real parents. And I understand that everything you've ever said to me has been a lie." "It wasn't supposed to happen this way!" she cried. "You were supposed to die quietly, and I was supposed to take your place as Luna. The pack would have been stronger, better...... "Under whose leadership? Neon's?" I laughed, and the sound was cold even to my own ears. "A weak, greedy man who betrays his own mate? Or yours? The daughter of murderers who's been playing dress-up in a dead girl's life?" Yvonne fell to her knees, sobbing. "Please, Thelma, I'm still your sister. I raised you, I cared for you—" "You cared for the idea of me," I corrected. "The compliant, powerless version who would do exactly what you wanted. But that girl is dead, Yvonne. And I am something else entirely." We should kill her now, Thalia suggested, her voice hungry for vengeance. She doesn't deserve to live after what she's done to us. For a moment, I was tempted. The rage inside me was so pure, so consuming, that ending Yvonne's life would have felt like justice. But then I heard footsteps approaching—several sets, moving with purpose. "Get up," I told Yvonne sharply. "We have company." Xavier appeared at the end of the hallway, accompanied by two other men I didn't recognize. But what made my breath catch was the way he moved—there was an authority in his step that hadn't been there before, a confidence that spoke of a man who no longer needed to hide his true nature. When his eyes met mine, I felt Thalia practically purr with satisfaction. His wolf recognizes us now, she whispered. Look at how he's staring. He can sense the change in us. "Thelma," Xavier said, his voice formal but warm. "I hope you slept well. We have much to discuss." One of his companions—a tall man with silver hair and sharp features—stepped forward. "I am Marcus, Beta of the Leon pack and Xavier's advisor. We've been investigating certain... irregularities... concerning your family history." Dad chose that moment to appear, flanked by Mom and several pack enforcers. His face was thunderous, but I could see the fear lurking beneath his anger. "What kind of irregularities?" he demanded. Marcus smiled, but it was the kind of smile that promised unpleasant revelations. "The kind that involve the mysterious disappearance of the original Tee pack leadership twenty-three years ago. Specifically, Alpha Jonathan Tee and Luna Sarah Tee, along with their infant daughter." The silence that followed was deafening. Mom's face had gone ashen, and Dad looked like he was struggling to breathe. That's ancient history," Dad said finally. "Everyone knows they were killed in a rogue attack." "Actually," Xavier spoke up, his eyes never leaving mine, "we have evidence suggesting otherwise. Evidence that they were murdered by members of their own extended family in a coup designed to steal control of the pack." He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, leather-bound journal. "This belonged to Luna Sarah. She managed to hide it before she died, along with instructions that it should only be opened by her daughter—when her wolf finally awakened." My hands were shaking as I reached for the journal. The moment my fingers touched the leather, I felt a jolt of recognition that went soul-deep. Open it, Thalia urged. It's time you learned the truth about who you really are."* But before I could open the journal, Neon burst into the hallway, his face wild with desperation and fury. "Enough!" he shouted. "I don't care about ancient history or family secrets! Thelma belongs to me! She's been promised to me since childhood, and I won't let some outsider steal what's mine!" He lunged toward me, his eyes flashing with his wolf's rage. But before he could reach me, something extraordinary happened. Without conscious thought, I raised my hand, and Neon stopped mid-stride as if he'd hit an invisible wall. His eyes went wide with shock as he struggled against an unseen force. That's our power, Thalia said proudly. "The bloodline gift of the original Tee alphas. We can compel other wolves to submit to our will". Impossible, Dad breathed. The bloodline gifts died with.... "With my parents?" I finished, my voice carrying a new authority that made everyone in the hallway instinctively take a step back. "No, they didn't die. They were just sleeping. But I'm awake now." I opened the journal, and my mother's graceful handwriting seemed to glow on the page: "To my beloved daughter, if you are reading this, then the worst has come to pass. But know that you carry within you the power of a thousand generations of Tee alphas. You are not just a Luna, you are destined to be an Alpha Queen. Trust Xavier Leon. His family has been our allies for centuries, and he will help you reclaim what was stolen. The pendant with this journal will reveal the location of your true pack's core. Use it wisely, my darling daughter. Make them pay for what they've done". As I finished reading, I felt something shift inside me....a power so vast and ancient that it took my breath away. When I looked up, everyone was staring at me with a mixture of awe and terror. Now, I said, my voice echoing with otherworldly authority, "let's discuss exactly how my parents really died. And what you're going to do to make amends".
