Chapter 10: Desperate Times, Desperate Acts
SERAPHINA
The scream that tore from my throat sounded like something that didn't come out from a person. This wasn't just mere poison, it was hell. Every cell in my body felt like it was being burned from the inside out. Wolves when they touch silver gets burned very well but this time around it was liquid silver that was being poured into my system.
My wolf, who had been so close to the surface since Kieran's call, retreated deep inside me, whimpering in agony.
"Well, well," Elena said, her voice filled with gleeful satisfaction that shows that she was happy with what she just discovered. She giggled and clapped her hands together as she continued.
"Looks like our little human has been keeping secrets."
Through the pain, I could see her face looming over my face as it was twisted with cruel delight.
The silver was working its way through my body burning all my resistance away and making everything fuzzy and distant. I couldn't focus, couldn't think clearly.
"You're a werewolf," Marcus said, and there was something like betrayal in his voice, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. His pathetic little weak 'human' wife was like him.
"All this time, you've been lying to me. Making me think I was protecting some helpless human when you're probably stronger than half my pack."
I tried to speak, tried to defend myself, but only a broken whimper emerged from my mouth as my whole body racked with pain.
"The question is," Elena continued, kneeling beside me with a grace only meant for evil people with evil agendas and a confidence that displays that they were certain that they would get away with it.
"What do we do with her now? The Lycan King is coming to this town, and he's going to be very unhappy when he finds out we've been treating his... friend... so poorly."
"She's not his friend," Marcus said, but there was uncertainty in his voice, like he was trying to convince himself as well.
"She can't be. She's nobody. She's just—"
"Just what?" Elena interrupted. "Just a random werewolf who happens to have the most powerful Alpha in the country saved in her phone? Who he call by name? Who he is dropping everything for just to come rescue?"
The room seemed to be spinning around me, shadows dancing at the edges of my vision.
I could feel my conscience slipping away but I forced myself to listen , I needed to know what they were planning to do to me.
"We could kill her," Elena suggested casually, as if she were discussing the weather, which was either a clue that she had killed before and was numb to it or she was thinking she could do it and not suffer the consequences of her actions.
"Make it look like an accident. By the time he gets here, there won't be anything left to find."
"No," Marcus said quickly, shaking his head as he discarded that plan on the spot.
"Killing the Lycan King's... whatever she is to him... that's a death sentence for both of us. For the entire pack."
"Then what do you suggest?" Elena demanded, snapping at him as she clenched her fist.
"Because once he gets here, once he sees what we've done to her, we're dead anyway."
There was a long pause, and I could practically hear Marcus thinking. When he spoke again, his voice was cold and calculating.
"We mark her," he said. My heart stopped.
"What?" Elena yelled, her voice rising to high pitch that made my ears ring as well.
"Think about it," Marcus continued, his tone growing more confident as he tries to convince Elena of his plan.
"If I mark her, if I make her truly mine, then she belongs to me. The mate bond is sacred, even to the Lycan King. He can't take another Alpha's marked mate, no matter who he is or what power he holds."
"You can't be serious," Elena snarled shaking her head as she pointed at me, lying on the floor. "You're going to mark that lying b***h instead of me?"
"It's not about what I want," Marcus replied, though I could hear the lie in his voice, a part of him wanted to claim me once that he knew I was a wolf. Probably the part that loved me a long time ago.
"It's about survival. Once she's marked, she'll be bound to me completely and there are a lot of benefits attached to this. She won't be able to defy me, won't be able to leave. And the Lycan King will have to accept that she's no longer available."
"And what about me?" Elena demanded angrily as she continued, clinging onto him.
"What about our bond? Our future?"
"You'll still be my mistress," Marcus said dismissively, pushing her away as he continued speaking.
"Nothing has to change between us. But she needs to be secured, contained. The mark will ensure her loyalty."
I tried to scream, tried to fight, but none of my nervous system were working anymore. My brain was screaming and yelling but my whole body was disconnected making me useless.
All I could do was lie there, helpless, as they discussed violating the most sacred bond between werewolves. A forced marking was considered r**e in our world.
"I won't let you do this," Elena hissed, and I heard the sound of claws extending from her nails.
"You don't have a choice," Marcus replied coldly, seeming not bothered by her reaction "Unless you have a better idea for keeping us all alive when the Lycan King arrives."
The room fell silent except for Elena's angry breathing and my own labored gasps. The silver was making it hard to breathe, hard to think. But through the fog of pain and drugs, one thought remained crystal clear.
Kieran. I needed Kieran.
I tried to reach out through whatever connection we still shared, and tried to send him some signal of my distress. But the silver was blocking everything, cutting me off from my wolf, from any supernatural abilities I might have been able to use.
"Fine," Elena said finally, her voice bitter with defeat. "But I want her to suffer for this. I want her to know exactly what she's cost me."
"After I mark her, you can do whatever you want," Marcus replied. "As long as you don't kill her. We need her alive and bound to prove to the Lycan King that she's no longer his concern."
