Sara's Whim

"Where's my bag?" "Oh, god Sara!" Lavender cried incredulously, "You forgot your bag?! You turned out to be more absent-minded than me!" "Which apparently means," Violet said, a smile slowly drawing upon her face, "You agree that you do not pay attention in class after all."  "What? I- no- seriously?" Lavender stammered, turning red as Sara and Violet started laughing. "Girls! We need to do something about Sara's bag." It took some time for them to stop laughing and compose themselves. Then Sara slowly looked around the class but knew it was hopeless. Just then- "Sara! What on earth is your bag doing here?" a boy called out. Sara turned to see her bag appear out of nowhere at the back of her class. "Oh my, thank you so much, Thomas!" "Uh, no problem." he turned away, looking confused. "Wow." Lavender stared in wonder. "How did it end up there?" "Dunno." Violet shrugged. "At least she got it back." "Yeah," Sara said, but her mind was deeply unsettled. She wondered if it was a ninja. But she also thought of the hustle and bustle she'd seen in the academy and knew they were too busy to do anything of the sort. Besides, they probably didn't know her house location. But then again, Ninja 9999 had drawn a map from her house to the academy, so there was a possibility. Her gaze involuntarily travelled after Thomas. Why did he look so familiar? Where had she seen him before? She shook her head, placed her thoughts aside on the shelf and decided to heed Violet's advice and did not make it her business.  She would have opened her bag and checked her lunch box had Salvanius not approached. "So," she began, "Wenz seems pretty keen on throwing herself out of the school." Then lowering her lofty voice she leaned in, "I don't suppose she told you two anything about what happened, eh?" "None of your business," said Violet, pushing Salvanius away. Salavanius just straightened up and sneered.  "Proof! She really hasn't told you anything. She probably wants to be friendless as well. God knows why you want to be friends with her and- Oh god Wenz!" she cried, laughing, "What's it with you? You look like a ghost!" Sara had turned pale at these words. She wished Salvanius was wrong but she knew she wasn't. "Nothing." Sara managed, "Come on." She added to Lavender and Violet. Only when they reached a lonely place where there weren't many people, she could cry. Lavender and Violet were stunned since they always thought Sara to be unemotional and practical. She hardly ever dwelled in the past and focused on the present. Her reasoning was always cold and nearly accurate. Lavender approached her cautiously like she were a wild untamed animal. "Sara," she said in a small voice, "Just don't listen to Salvanius. She can say all that she likes. But remember- we'll never leave you for all the world's worth."  "Besides," Violet added, "you are the top of our year and all the teachers like you. Maybe she is jealous. You know that too, don't you?" Sara just nodded, but her mind was trying to decide if she should tell them about the whole ninja episode or not. Violet seemed to have read her mind. "As for that secret, you don't have to bother about it. It is absolutely alright if you don't tell us about it. We will always be there to help if a problem arises." "But the problem is," Violet interrupted, "we don't know what the problem is." "Er- she's right. But we'll do as much as we can. But please don't cry, we implore you. Tears don't really don't look good on you." Sara wiped her tears off. Her friends had made her feel better and she felt more or less convinced that Salvanius was wrong. She managed a smile, "Thanks." "Now that is more I like it!" Lavender grinned. "Let's go." They reached class and finished their snacks. The rest of the day went as normal as it could- Salvanius garbling on about the possibilities Sara could be late for the rest of the year and get expelled. Sara knew the former was true but she didn't mind it this time. At last, when Salvanius could get no genuine response, she stopped. School ended. Later that day, however, something not-so-normal happened.
