A Close Call

676 Words
Apart from the fact that Miss Pennyfeather was cross on Sara, everything was fine at school. Apparently, the late arrival was still on her mind. When the bell rang, Sara eagerly rushed out to narrate the real incident to two of her closest friends- Violet and Lavender.  Violet although, light-hearted, kind and clever, had an annoying personality of getting into mischief and trouble by playing pranks. She was hardly ever caught, but when she tended to do so, she'd escape out of the grip of punishments by clever tricks and convincing stories. She had blonde hair pulled into two adorable pigtails. She had grey eyes which gave her a solemn, intelligent look, but Sara knew better than to get deluded by it.  Lavender had blue eyes and black curly hair. She was quite disciplined in Sara's opinion. She always stared intently at the board as if listening but the teachers doubted it as neither her answers nor her marks made up for that statement. However, she too was polite and friendly. Sara had black, semi-curly hair tied into a high pony and her skin tone was a little dark. She had black eyes, not unlike her hair, and as far as her habits were concerned, she was a very determined, focused and punctual student. She was a likeable, quiet girl who was quite introverted. Most of the teachers liked her because of this nature and also because she was the top of her class.  Although the three of them were of completely different personalities, the force which bonded them together was faith and secrets. Whenever they shared secrets, they always kept it as it was. "Cool!" exclaimed Violet, when Sara had finished the story. "A clever thing you did too." said Lavender, "But why didn't you tell Miss Pennyfeather?" "S'pose she didn't feel like it." Violet shrugged. "It sounds too fantastic to be true." Sara said, "She'd obviously think I am making things up. And even if she did believe me, then the thing would eventually spread and become a rumour. And I do not want any-" "Well, well, well. What do we have here?" said a drawling voice. Sara personally wished it had never been there: their in-school-arch-enemy- Laifeca Salvanius, and Sara was greatly unsurprised to see her sidekicks- Siria Notoria and Natalie Lucida. Laifeca Salvanius was cunning and she was often hated by most of Sara's classmates. Notoria and Lucida were bigger and stronger than her but not as cunning. "That" said Lavender, "is none of your business" "Oooooh. Scared, are we?" Wenz seems cautious about concealing your little secret from Miss Pennywenny- She clamped her mouth shut but too late. Miss Pennyfeather happened to be passing the girls and appeared in the range of eavesdrop precisely at the moment she gave her name the most awful twist. She shrieked "DETENTION!" at the three of them and swearing under her breath, Salvanius slumped away in defeat by her stupidity, with her company. Once they were out of sight, Sara, Violet and Lavender laughed out heartily as a wave of relief rushed past them. "A close call" said Violet. "Indeed." muttered Sara, who had a feeling they wouldn't see Salvanius, Notoria and Lucida for some time till break gets over. "But we must watch our step from now on." "Exactly. We'd never know who could be within earshot when we talk." Lavender agreed. "And let's stay away from Salvanius and her sidekicks as much as possible." nodded Violet, "I think I can put a paper bomb under her seat," she muttered, "that should do it. It would actually get her double detention." Sara shook her head with deep disapproval, "You would not want to take the risk."  Lavender suddenly glanced at her watch and frowned. "What is it Lav?" Sara asked. "Break's about to be over in 2 minutes." said Lavender. Sara and Violet frowned too. "Yeah," said Violet "let's go." They ran to class as fast as their legs could carry them and reached class exactly when the bell rang. There were on time.
