The Awakening Echo

450 Words
The Awakening Echo The kneeling of the Night Seekers sent a heavier silence through the forest than any scream could have. Clara felt her knees weaken. “Why are they… kneeling?” Rowan’s grip tightened around his blade. “Because that stone is not just an object,” he said slowly. “It’s a signal.” Eli trembled violently, his eyes darting between the kneeling riders and the black stone pulsing in their leader’s hand. “I didn’t do anything,” he whispered again and again, like it was a prayer. But the air around him disagreed. It shimmered faintly, like heat trapped in glass. The lead rider rose slowly, still holding the stone. “He is responding faster than predicted,” the rider said, voice no longer confident. “The seal is weakening.” Rowan stepped forward. “What seal? Speak clearly.” The rider hesitated. Then said, “The seal was placed on him at birth.” Clara turned sharply toward Eli. “At birth?” Eli shook his head. “I don’t know anything about that.” But his voice cracked, as if he didn't even fully believe it. The rider continued, “He was not meant to awaken until the final cycle. Someone has interfered.” A sharp gust of wind swept through the clearing, though the trees around them remained still. Eli cried out as faint glowing lines appeared on his wrists—patterns like ancient markings surfacing beneath his skin. Clara grabbed his arms gently. “Eli, look at me. Breathe.” “I can feel it,” he said, voice breaking. “Something inside me… pushing.” Rowan turned sharply toward the riders. “Who interfered?” The leader slowly lowered the black stone. “Someone who fears what he will become,” he replied. Suddenly, the stone cracked. A sharp sound echoed through the forest like glass breaking in the sky. The kneeling riders recoiled instantly, rising to their feet in alarm. Rowan stepped back. “That’s not possible…” Clara’s voice shook. “What’s happening now?” The leader’s calm finally shattered. “He is breaking the bond!” Eli collapsed to his knees as light burst from the cracks in the stone—thin beams of dark energy spiraling upward into the sky. The forest darkened. Birds fell silent. Even the wind stopped moving. Rowan rushed forward. “Clara, take him back!” But it was too late. Eli lifted his head slowly. And for a brief moment, his eyes were no longer his own. They glowed silver. The riders stepped back in unison. “He has awakened,” one of them whispered. And far beyond the forest, something answered.
