The Voice Beyond the Forest

The Voice Beyond the Forest The silver glow in Eli’s eyes faded slowly, like a fading moon swallowed by clouds. He blinked, confused, then collapsed into Clara’s arms. “What… was that?” he whispered, his voice small again. Clara held him tightly, her hands trembling. “You’re safe,” she said, though she wasn’t sure she believed it anymore. Rowan stood frozen, staring at the shattered black stone still pulsing faintly on the ground. The Night Seekers had stepped back, no longer advancing. For the first time, they looked uncertain. “That wasn’t supposed to happen here,” Rowan muttered. One of the riders spoke, voice lower now. “The bond is fractured. If he continues to awaken without guidance, the barrier will collapse completely.” Clara looked up sharply. “Barrier? What barrier?” But the riders did not answer her. Instead, they slowly backed away, retreating into the trees as if something in the clearing had become too dangerous even for them. Within moments, they were gone. Silence returned—but it was not peaceful. It felt watched. Eli stirred in Clara’s arms. “I heard something,” he said weakly. Rowan stepped closer. “What did you hear?” Eli hesitated, his eyes still unfocused. “A voice… not like yours. Not like anyone’s.” Clara frowned. “What did it say?” Eli swallowed hard. “It said… ‘Finally.’” A cold chill passed through the clearing. Rowan immediately turned toward the forest line. “We need to move. Now.” Clara shook her head. “We just escaped one threat. Now you want to run again?” Rowan’s expression hardened. “That wasn't an escape. That was hesitation. They left because something worse just acknowledged him.” Eli sat up slowly, clutching Clara’s sleeve. “I didn’t want to wake anything.” Clara brushed his hair back gently. “You didn’t do anything wrong.” But even as she said it, the air shifted again—subtle, distant, like something enormous turning its attention toward them. From far beyond the forest, a deep sound echoed. Not thunder. Not wind. Something older. Rowan went still. “That’s impossible…” Clara looked at him. “What is it?” He exhaled slowly. “The Echo Realm.” Eli’s fingers tightened around Clara’s hand. “Is it coming for me?” Rowan didn’t answer immediately. Then, quietly: “It already knows your name.” The forest around them darkened slightly, as if the daylight itself had dimmed. And somewhere far away, something began moving toward Willow Creek.
