The Missing Half

The Missing Half “Eli, stop!” Clara’s voice cracked as she reached for him. But Eli didn’t stop. His steps were slow, almost uncertain, as if something invisible was pulling him forward. The air around the tear in reality pulsed stronger with every movement he made. Rowan moved instantly to block him. “You don’t understand what you’re doing.” Eli looked up at him, frightened but determined. “I think I do.” The creature from the Echo Realm tilted its head again, watching. Waiting. The tear widened slightly as Eli approached, responding like a wound recognizing the hand that caused it. Clara rushed forward and grabbed Eli’s arm. “You’re not going anywhere near that thing.” For a moment, Eli hesitated. His body trembled, caught between fear and something deeper—something calling him from the other side. “I feel it,” he whispered. “Like… it’s part of me.” Rowan’s expression darkened. “Because it is.” Silence fell. Even the forest seemed to lean closer. Rowan exhaled slowly, lowering his blade slightly. “Listen carefully. The Echo Realm doesn’t just mirror life—it splits it. Balance is everything. But when the seal fractured, something was left incomplete.” Clara shook her head. “Speak clearly.” Rowan pointed at Eli. “He is not whole.” Eli stepped back as if struck. “No… I’m real.” “You are,” Rowan said firmly. “But not completely. Something of you exists on the other side. That’s why it’s calling you.” The creature in the tear raised its hand again. The voice returned, softer this time, almost gentle. “Return.” Eli’s breathing grew uneven. “What happens if I go?” Rowan didn’t answer immediately. That silence was worse than words. Clara stepped between Eli and the tears. “You are not a doorway,” she said firmly. “You are a child.” The creature paused. Then, for the first time, it moved differently—leaning closer, as if studying her. “Protective instinct noted,” it said. “Irrelevant.” A sudden force rippled outward from the tear. Clara was thrown backward. “Clara!” Eli shouted. Rowan caught her before she hit the ground, but his attention never left the tear. The creature stepped halfway through now. Its form is more defined, more solid than before. “The merge is accelerating,” Rowan muttered. “We’re running out of time.” Eli stared at his shaking hands. The faint silver markings returned, stronger this time. “I don’t want to lose anyone,” he said. Clara pushed herself up. “Then don’t leave us.” Eli looked at her. Then at the tear. Then at Rowan. And finally, he whispered, “If I’m the missing half… maybe I can fix it.” Rowan’s eyes widened. “Eli, wait—” But Eli was already stepping forward again. This time, the tear did not resist. It welcomed him. And as his foot crossed the threshold between worlds, everything went silent. Even the forest stopped breathing.
