The Sheriff’s Question

The Sheriff’s Question By sunrise, Rosewood was buzzing like a disturbed hive. People gathered in doorways, whispered over fences, and crowded inside Mrs. Carter’s bakery pretending to buy bread while asking questions. Everyone wanted to know the same thing. Who was the child? Some claimed he was a runaway. Others said he was cursed. A few insisted he was an angel sent to punish liars. No one agreed on anything except this—he knew secrets he should not know. The boy was found sitting calmly on a bench near the town fountain, his wet clothes somehow dry, his bare feet clean despite the mud around him. He watched the pigeons as if he had all the time in the world. Sheriff Nolan arrived with two deputies. Tall, 8broad-shouldered, and respected for more j ĥju9 years, he was not a man easily shaken. The crowd parted as he stepped forward. “Morning, son,” he said firmly. “What’s your name?” The child looked up but did not answer. “Where are your parents?” Still silence. The sheriff frowned. “Do you understand me?” The boy tilted his head slightly. Then he spoke. “You took money twenty years ago.” The square went silent. Sheriff Nolan’s jaw tightened. “What did you say?” “You blamed an innocent man,” the child continued. “He died in prison while you wore his badge.” Gasps rippled through the crowd. Mrs. Greene covered her mouth. One deputy stepped back in shock. The sheriff’s face drained of color. Sweat formed on his brow despite the cool morning air. “That’s nonsense,” he barked, but his voice cracked. The child stood from the bench. “His name was Walter Briggs.” The sheriff stumbled backward as though pushed. Everyone in town remembered Walter Briggs—the former deputy arrested for stealing evidence money decades ago. He had sworn he was innocent until the day he died behind bars. Nolan looked around at the staring faces and suddenly seemed much older. “Take him,” he ordered weakly. But neither deputy moved. For the first time in Rosewood, Sheriff Nolan looked like a guilty man.
