Chapter 4: The First Fake Date Monday arrived like a freight train, and Lily was less than thrilled about it. The weekend had passed in a blur of awkward moments, public stares, and an unsettling realization: she kind of enjoyed hanging out with Ryan. It wasn’t supposed to be fun. It was fake. But the more time they spent together, the more it felt like a real date—minus the whole pretending part. At school, the rumor mill was in full swing. Everyone was talking about her and Ryan, and even though she couldn’t stand the attention, she had to admit there was a certain thrill to it. The first time she passed by a group of students and heard them whispering about her and Ryan, her heart had nearly stopped. “You okay?” Emma asked, appearing beside her with a smirk. “You look like you’re about to have a meltdown.” Lily rolled her eyes. “It’s just... the whole pretending thing is starting to feel a little too real. And now everyone is talking about it.” “Yeah, well,” Emma said, grinning, “at least you’re not being ignored. That’s gotta count for something.” “Great. Now I’m a school wide spectacle.” “Come on, it’s not all bad,” Emma teased. “Ryan Carter is, like, every girl’s dream. You’re basically living the high school fantasy.” “Except I’m not living it. I’m faking it.” “That’s the beauty of it,” Emma said, winking. “Fake it ‘til you make it, right?” --- By lunchtime, Lily was dreading the inevitable encounter with Ryan. She knew he’d find her. He always did. Sure enough, as soon as she stepped into the cafeteria, Ryan was waiting at their usual table, looking way too comfortable. “Hey, Love Guru,” Ryan said, flashing his signature grin. “How’s my favorite fake girlfriend?” Lily shot him a glare. “I’m just fine. You know, living the dream.” “Oh, I’m sure you are,” Ryan said, leaning back in his chair. “I was thinking about what we should do this weekend.” “Another fake date?” Lily asked, raising an eyebrow. Ryan shrugged. “Why not? We’re already in this deep. Might as well have some fun with it.” Lily sighed. “I’m not sure I’m cut out for this.” “Come on, you’re doing great,” Ryan said. “People are totally buying it. Plus, it’s not like we’re doing anything too crazy. Just acting like a couple. How hard can it be?” “Really?” Lily shot back. “Because this is already feeling like a disaster.” Ryan laughed. “If it’s a disaster, it’s a pretty entertaining one. Everyone is talking about us.” “Yeah, well, I’m not sure how much more of this I can take,” Lily admitted. “Don’t worry,” Ryan said with a wink. “You’re doing a great job. Just remember, it’s all part of the plan.” --- The rest of the day was a blur of awkward glances and whispers. By the time school ended, Lily was mentally exhausted. She was starting to wish the whole fake dating thing would just end already. But then Ryan texted her, reminding her of their plans for the weekend. Ryan: “Hey, don’t forget about our plans. Pick you up at noon on Saturday.” Lily groaned. “How could I forget?” She was starting to wonder if she was in over her head. It had been easier to ignore the attraction she felt toward Ryan when they weren’t spending so much time together. But now? She could hardly stop thinking about it. Was this really just a fake relationship? Or was she starting to catch feelings? --- Saturday arrived, and Lily couldn’t decide if she wanted to crawl into a hole and hide or face the music. Ryan was picking her up for their “date,” and she wasn’t sure she was ready for whatever he had planned. She stood in front of her mirror, checking herself for the umpteenth time. Was she supposed to dress like they were a real couple? Or was she just supposed to look as miserable as she felt? Her phone buzzed. It was Ryan. Ryan: “I’m here. Let’s make this a memorable date, yeah?” Lily rolled her eyes and walked out the door. When she got in the car, Ryan greeted her with his usual grin. “You look cute.” Lily sighed. “Don’t start with that. I’m not your girlfriend.” Ryan chuckled. “Yet.” Lily couldn’t help but laugh despite herself. “What’s the plan today? Another public spectacle?” Ryan turned the car onto the main street and smirked. “Maybe. But this time, I thought we’d keep it a little more low-key.” Lily raised an eyebrow. “Oh, really? I’m shocked.” Ryan grinned. “I promise. It’ll be fun.” --- The rest of the day passed in a blur of awkward but surprisingly fun moments. They went to an arcade, played games, and grabbed ice cream afterward. The whole time, Lily kept reminding herself that it was all fake—that it was just a game. But somewhere between winning a ridiculous amount of stuffed animals and laughing at Ryan’s attempts to beat her high score, Lily started to forget the “fake” part. It wasn’t real, she reminded herself again. It wasn’t. But then, as they walked out of the arcade, Ryan turned to her with that look—the one that made her heart skip a beat. “You know,” he said casually, “this isn’t so bad.” Lily swallowed. “What do you mean?” He shrugged. “This. Us. Hanging out. It’s not... horrible.” Lily’s heart raced. “Yeah. It’s not horrible.” And for the first time, she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
