Chapter 7: Hidden Truths The weekend had arrived, and with it came a much-needed break from the stresses of school. Lily had been reflecting on everything that had happened lately—the new dynamic between her and Ryan, their growing friendship, and the uncomfortable yet exciting tension that was forming between them. But as much as she tried to focus on the positives, there was still something lingering in the back of her mind. Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, pulling her out of her thoughts. It was a message from Ryan. “Hey, can we talk? I need to explain something. I’ll be at your place in 10 minutes.” Lily’s stomach flipped at the suddenness of his message. She quickly replied, “Sure, come on over.” Within minutes, there was a knock at the door. Lily opened it to find Ryan standing there, his face unusually serious. He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his hands in his pockets as if he was gathering his thoughts. “Hey,” he said, looking around. “Can we sit down? There’s something I need to tell you.” Lily nodded, her pulse quickening as she led him to the couch. They sat down next to each other, but the space between them felt like an ocean. Something was different today, and she couldn’t quite place what it was. “Lily, I’ve been thinking about us, about what’s been going on,” Ryan began, his voice soft but heavy. “I haven’t been completely honest with you, and I owe you that.” Lily felt a knot form in her stomach. She wasn’t sure what he meant, but she could tell it was important. “What is it, Ryan?” He paused, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. “Before we started hanging out, I was in a serious relationship. And even though I’m not with her anymore, I haven’t fully processed everything. I think part of me just wanted a distraction when we started this whole thing with pretending to be together.” Lily’s heart sank. She had known Ryan had a past with Chloe, but hearing him speak about it like this made her realize how little she really knew about him. She didn’t want to be anyone’s rebound. She wanted something real, something solid. “I didn’t know you were still dealing with that,” Lily said, her voice steady despite the emotions swirling inside her. “I understand if you’re not ready for something else yet, Ryan. I just—" Ryan quickly cut her off. “No, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m not asking you to wait around for me or to settle for being second choice. I don’t want to mess this up with you. What I’m saying is... I’ve been in my head about it, and I need to be upfront with you.” Lily took a deep breath, trying to process everything he had just shared. Ryan was still hurting, still trying to move on from his past, and she respected that. But she also didn’t want to be caught in the middle of someone’s unfinished business. “I get it,” Lily said, meeting his gaze. “I don’t want to be part of a rebound. And I need you to know that I’m not just doing this because it’s easy. I’m here because I care about you, Ryan.” Ryan’s eyes softened, and he reached out to gently take her hand. “I care about you too. And I don’t want to keep pretending that I have everything figured out. But I’m trying, Lily. I really am.” They sat there in silence for a few moments, the weight of their conversation hanging between them. Lily wasn’t sure what the future held, but for the first time, she felt like they were finally being honest with each other. “I think we should take things slow,” Lily said softly. “No more pretending. Let’s just see where this goes, okay?” Ryan nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Yeah. No more pretending.” --- Later that night, after Ryan had left, Lily sat in her room, reflecting on everything they had talked about. She wasn’t sure what would happen next, but for the first time in a while, she felt a sense of clarity. She wasn’t looking for perfection—she was looking for something real, and that was exactly what they had just started building. Her phone buzzed again. A text from Ryan. “I meant it, Lily. I don’t want to mess this up. I’m still figuring things out, but I’m all in. Just wanted you to know.” Lily smiled to herself as she typed back. “Me too. One step at a time, right?” Ryan’s reply came almost instantly. “One step at a time.” Lily set her phone down and leaned back in her chair, letting out a long breath. Maybe things were complicated, maybe there were still uncertainties ahead, but at least now they were facing them together. --- The next day at school, things felt a little lighter between them. They didn’t have it all figured out yet, but they didn’t need to. They were learning to take it one day at a time, one honest conversation at a time. As they walked to class, side by side, Lily couldn’t help but feel like they were finally on the same page. She didn’t know what the future held for her and Ryan, but for the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful about it.
