Continuation of chapter 1

1078 Words
Apologies for the misunderstanding! Let me continue Chapter 1 where it left off: --- Lily was convinced she could avoid Ryan Carter for the rest of the day. That confidence lasted all of ten minutes, right up until Emma dragged her into the cafeteria. “There he is,” Emma whispered, not-so-subtly nodding toward the far end of the room. Ryan was leaning casually against a table, surrounded by his friends. His smile lit up the space like he was in a toothpaste commercial. “He’s not going to—” Lily started, but before she could finish, Ryan spotted her. His eyes lit up, and he started walking toward her with a determined stride. “Oh no,” Lily muttered, already turning toward the nearest exit. “Too late,” Emma said, stifling a laugh. “Lily!” Ryan’s voice carried across the cafeteria, earning stares from half the room. Lily froze. There was no escaping now. She turned slowly, forcing a neutral expression onto her face. “Ryan. Fancy seeing you here.” Ryan stopped in front of her, his trademark grin firmly in place. “Listen, I know you said no, but I’m serious about this. I need your help, and I know you’re the right person for the job.” “What job?” someone from the crowd asked, snickering. “Let me guess,” Lily said dryly. “You need me to help you figure out how to tie your shoes?” Ryan laughed, but he didn’t back down. “No. I need you to help me win over Chloe Rivera.” The cafeteria erupted in whispers and gasps. Chloe Rivera, the school’s sweetheart, was sitting a few tables away, oblivious to the commotion. Lily’s face turned red. “You seriously want me to—” “Yes,” Ryan interrupted, his eyes gleaming. “You’re the Love Guru, right? Everyone’s saying you know everything about relationships.” “That’s not true!” Lily protested. “It was one comment! One sarcastic comment!” “Doesn’t matter,” Ryan said confidently. “I know you’re the only one who can help me.” Lily stared at him, her mind racing. This couldn’t be happening. This shouldn’t be happening. But as Ryan stood there, looking at her with a mix of hope and determination, she realized something terrible: there was no way she was getting out of this without making a scene. “Fine,” she said through gritted teeth. “I’ll think about it. But no promises.” Ryan’s grin widened. “That’s all I needed to hear.” As he walked away, the whispers in the cafeteria grew louder. Lily groaned, burying her face in her hands. “What just happened?” she asked Emma. Emma smirked. “You, my friend, just became the most interesting person in school.” Alright, let’s continue! This next part leads into the end of Chapter 1, with a bit more focus on Lily’s internal conflict and a teaser for what’s to come. --- That evening, Lily flopped onto her bed, groaning into her pillow. “Why me?” she mumbled, her voice muffled. Emma’s voice crackled through her phone, which was balanced precariously on the edge of her desk. “Because you’re funny, sarcastic, and accidentally brilliant at solving other people’s problems?” Lily rolled over and glared at the phone. “That’s not helping.” “Come on, Lily, this isn’t the worst thing ever,” Emma said cheerfully. “Ryan Carter chose you to help him. Do you know how many girls would kill to be in your shoes right now?” “I’d gladly give them my shoes,” Lily said, tossing a pillow at the phone. “What was I supposed to say? ‘Sure, Ryan, let me fix your love life while the entire school stares at me like I’m some kind of dating wizard.’” “Actually, that sounds kind of cool,” Emma said. “You could totally own the whole ‘Love Guru’ thing. Make it your brand!” “Pass,” Lily said firmly. But despite her protests, she couldn’t stop thinking about Ryan’s offer. He’d looked so earnest, so completely convinced that she was the only person who could help him. It was ridiculous... right? Her thoughts were interrupted by a ping from her phone. She glanced at the screen and froze. It was a text. From Ryan Carter. Ryan: “So, what’s the verdict, Love Guru? Can we meet tomorrow to make a plan?” Lily stared at the message, her stomach doing an unwelcome flip. She should say no. She needed to say no. But instead, her fingers hovered over the keyboard, typing before she could stop herself. Lily: “Fine. One meeting. No promises.” She hit send, groaning as soon as she saw the little “delivered” checkmark appear. What had she just gotten herself into? --- The next morning, Lily walked into school with her head down, hoping to blend into the background as usual. Unfortunately, blending in wasn’t an option anymore. “Hey, Love Guru!” someone called as she passed by. Lily glared at the floor, her cheeks heating up. “I hate this school,” she muttered under her breath. By the time she reached her locker, Ryan was already there, leaning casually against it like he owned the place. “You’re late,” he said, flashing that infuriating grin. “It’s not even 8:00 a.m.,” Lily shot back. “What do you want, Carter?” “To finalize our plan,” he said, holding up a notebook. “I made a list of ideas.” Lily snatched the notebook from him, flipping through the pages. It was filled with messy handwriting, doodles of hearts, and an alarming number of bullet points. “Step one: Be charming,” she read aloud, raising an eyebrow. “Wow, groundbreaking stuff here.” “Hey, it’s a work in progress,” Ryan said defensively. “That’s why I need your help!” Lily sighed, shutting the notebook. “Fine. But if we’re doing this, we’re doing it my way. And for the record, I still think this is a terrible idea.” Ryan’s grin widened. “Terrible ideas are my specialty.” Lily groaned. “This is going to be a disaster.” “Maybe,” Ryan said with a wink. “But it’ll be fun.” ---
