📍 Knight Mansion – Family Dining Room – Evening
The dining room of the Knight mansion gleamed under warm chandelier light. A long oak table stretched in the center, beautifully set with silverware, candles, and steaming dishes.
Helena had outdone herself — roasted chicken, creamy mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, and her famous lemon tarts for dessert.
Everyone was seated.
On one side sat Emma beside Ethan, their chairs slightly apart. James and Helena across from them. Laura and Michael had been invited for the dinner, and of course… Sophie had joined too, practically glowing with mischief.
“So,” Helena began warmly, pouring herself some wine, “how was the lake house?”
Emma gave a polite smile. “Quiet.”
“Too quiet,” Ethan muttered beside her.
James raised a brow. “You didn’t try to throw each other off the cliff?”
Emma and Ethan looked at each other.
She smirked. “Tempting.”
Ethan bit back a smile and turned his attention to the bread basket.
Everyone chuckled.
The laughter settled. Then Michael, who had been unusually quiet all evening, set his glass down and spoke.
“I know this marriage happened… suddenly,” he said, glancing toward Ethan, then at Emma, “because of circumstances. My health, our reputation, that incident at the wedding—”
Emma’s smile faded a little.
Ethan stiffened beside her.
Michael continued gently. “But now that you’re husband and wife, your mother and I — and I’m sure Helena and James feel the same — we hope you’ll start… truly understanding each other.”
James nodded. “He’s right. You both deserve more than just coexisting under the same roof.”
Laura chimed in softly, “We know it wasn’t the marriage you imagined, sweetheart…” She looked at Emma. “But marriages built in storms can still bloom in peace.”
Helena smiled warmly. “Exactly. And we’re all here to support you.”
Emma didn’t know what to say.
But before the silence grew awkward—
Sophie smirked and leaned forward.
“Oh yeah, totally,” she said, sipping her juice dramatically. “Start understanding each other... fall madly in love… and make me an aunt.”
Emma choked on her water. “Sophie!”
The entire table burst into laughter.
James covered his mouth with a napkin, Helena laughed openly, and Laura shook her head with a playful sigh.
Michael pretended to look horrified. “You’re still a child!”
Sophie grinned, unbothered. “Just putting it into the universe.
Emma looked at Ethan briefly. He wasn’t laughing, but he wasn’t irritated either. He looked thoughtful — as if something had settled in his mind.
She glanced down at her plate, her face warm.
Ethan finally spoke, voice low but clear, eyes still on his food:
> “Understanding takes time.”
It silenced the table for a second.
Emma looked up at him again — surprised. Not by what he said, but by the way he said it.
As if he… meant it.
---
The mansion behind her buzzed with soft laughter and clinking glasses, but out here, under the starlit sky and ivy-covered stone arches, it was calm.
Emma stood near the marble railing, her glass of water resting beside her. The night wind stirred the leaves gently, brushing across her bare back where the open zip of her dress had slightly parted.
The maroon satin hugged her curves, elegant and understated — a gift from Helena earlier that week. She wore it without much thought… until now.
Liam strolled over casually, hands in his pockets, his voice light. “Beautiful night. But I’ve got a feeling you're not here to count stars.”
Emma gave a soft smile, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Just needed space. Everyone keeps pretending this is a fairytale.”
“Maybe they want it to be,” Liam shrugged. “Maybe you do too.”
She glanced away.
Then, changing the subject, she asked, “Anything on that number?”
“Not yet. Whoever called you — they used a disposable number. But I’m digging deeper. Could be someone you knew. Or someone watching.”
Emma’s fingers tightened around her glass.
“Thanks, Liam,” she whispered.
“Don’t thank me yet,” he said, stepping back. “This mess is getting bigger. Be careful.”
Just as he turned, a low voice cut through the quiet.
> “Didn’t realize I was interrupting something.”
Ethan.
He was walking down the steps slowly, his sleeves rolled up, hands in his trouser pockets, expression unreadable.
Liam smirked. “Knight. Calm down. I wasn’t kissing your wife.”
Ethan didn’t smile.
Liam chuckled awkwardly and gave Emma a quick salute. “Don’t stay out too long. Garden's nice, but so is your room.”
He disappeared through the ivy path.
Emma sighed. “He’s dramatic.”
Ethan stopped in front of her. His eyes scanned her face. “Why are you out here with him?”
Her brows drew together. “Are you serious?”
“I’m just asking.”
She turned her back to him, annoyed. “I needed fresh air.”
She didn't see the way Ethan’s gaze dropped — to the open zip at the back of her dress, exposing the smooth skin of her upper back.
“I think your dress is trying to fall apart,” he murmured.
She froze. “What?”
“Turn around.”
Emma hesitated… but then slowly turned.
Ethan stepped behind her. His breath was steady, but close — so close she could feel it against her neck.
His fingers brushed her spine as he reached for the zipper.
He moved slowly — cautiously — as though afraid touching her too long might betray him.
The zipper tugged upward…
Then snagged.
Emma shifted slightly, and in that moment, the strap on her shoulder slipped down with the fabric, exposing even more of her bare skin.
> “Sorry,” he said, his voice lower now, gravel-like.
He didn’t step back.
His hand remained frozen against her lower back, her skin now burning beneath the cool night air.
Emma’s eyes fluttered closed — not in fear. Not in shame.
In confusion.
In conflicted want.
She turned her head to look at him — her lips inches from his jawline.
And then Ethan finally whispered — broken and breathless:
> “Don’t worry... I won’t touch you.”
> “Not until you ask me to.”
Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.
He was so close. But so still. Not demanding. Not pushing.
Just… waiting.
She could have closed the gap.
She didn’t.
But she didn’t move away either.
When she finally stepped back, Ethan slowly fixed the strap, zipped the dress fully, and without another word — turned and walked away.
Leaving Emma standing under the moonlight with trembling fingers…
And questions she couldn’t answer.
