Repressed Past

Soft rays of sunlight landed on my eyelids, waking me up from a dreamless sleep. I was lucky I was even able to get any sleep after the revelation of last night. I could still clearly see Christian sitting on the side of my bed and tormenting me with his words. He was so good at it. Back when we were in college, Christian did not know who I was, but I knew almost everything about him. I refuse to call what I had for him obsession, it was something much deeper than that. I hated him and I hated the fact that he was better than me at everything. He was just so perfect and it was unfair. I found myself staying up for hours at night, studying to surpass him but it all just seemed like he was a mountain in front of me that I would never cross in a million years. I hated it. Just thinking about it made my blood boil. And then shortly after college, my parents decided to make me work under him as an apprentice, because they saw his achievements and were impressed and they wished that their daughter could someday become like him. If only they knew I wished for the same thing. It was during our time working together that he finally noticed me. For some reason, he picked on me out of everyone else in the office and he made it a point of duty to humiliate and bully me in front of everyone, everyday. How could I not hate him? After a few months of the constant torture, I quit working under him for good. And now, he's telling me I was married to him? “Serenity what did he do to you to make you marry him? Did he blackmail you with something?“ I asked myself in a whisper. A knock sounded on the door before the same nurse from last night came into the room. “how are you feeling Today Mrs. Lock—” “I'm Serenity Davenport. “ I cut her off sharply. I did not mean to sound rude so I let out an exhale and added. “please, call me Serenity.“ “that's fine by me.“ she said as she did a brief inspection of the machines that were still connected to my body. When she was satisfied by the readings she saw there, she turned to me. “so, how are you feeling? I can tell you don't have your memories back yet.“ “I'm not sure I want them back anymore.“ I told the woman. Another knock sounded on the door and the doctor stepped into the room. She was a beautiful, slender woman with dark curly hair that matched her eyes. She glanced at the machines connected to my body before she looked at me with warm eyes. “I am so happy to see you awake, Serenity.“ she said, I appreciated that she used my first name. “You are experiencing some memory loss, is that correct?“ “Apparently.“ I said simply. “you do not remember your husband?“ she asked again and I let out a sigh. “no, I do not remember being married.“ I stated flatly. She asked me a few other questions before turning to the nurse to discuss in hushed tones. After a few moments, she turned back to me. “you are a very strong woman, Serenity. An accident like that would have been fatal for a lot of people, especially with the trauma you experienced.“ she explained. “you should be due for discharge by the evening. Then you can go back home and try to recover your lost memories with your husband.“ “that would not be necessary.“ I said sharply. The woman narrowed her eyes at me in confusion. “you do not want to get back your memories?“ she questioned. “precisely, I also want nothing to do with the man you call my husband. And I would like to stay far away from anything that would make him close to me.“ “that is quite alright, we could work around that.“ the woman said with an understanding smile. Before she left the room, she said. “you must know that due to the nature of your amnesia your memories would definitely return eventually, it could happen gradually or at once.“ Her words pierced my brain like an arrow, I did not like the sound of inevitably getting back my memories, I was terrified to know what could have convinced me to marry Christian Lockwood. The nurse walked up to me and unplugged all the devices connected to my body and it felt a little strange because my body had grown accustomed to all the discomfort. When she left the room, I proceeded to tie my hair into a bun. I had no mirror so it probably looked like a birds nest but I could not care less. I swung my feet off the bed but as soon as my feet touched the cold floor I collapsed. I had not used my legs in so long so my knees had grown weak. If I could not walk, at least I could crawl, and crawl I did. I needed to get out of the four walls of that room before I lost my mind. When I reached the door, it was a hassle for me to reach the knob, but after several failed attempts, I managed to open up the door. Once the door swung open, my eyes landed on a pair of shiny shoes that looked expensive enough to buy everything I owned and I owned a lot of expensive things. Slowly, I looked up to see none other than Christian Lockwood. I let out a groan of frustration. His looked down at me with his pretty eyes that held equal hints of amusement and concern. “and where are you crawling to, little Siren?“ he asked as he stepped into the room, his body guard stayed outside my door as he shut it behind him. He was clad in a crisp grey suit that was all straight lines and sharp corners. He looked so clean that a single spec of dust on him would not go unnoticed. I felt like a crippled alligator on the floor as he looked down at me waiting for my answer. Who the f**k even let this man in here? I thought I made myself clear to the doctor and nurse that I wanted nothing to do with him. And now I was alone with him, again. “I just wanted to see if there was still a world outside that door.“ I don't know why I felt the need to explain myself to him, but I did anyway. “that's disappointing, I was hoping you would say you were coming to me.“ he said and I looked up at him with hatred, a familiar smile played at the corner of his lips. I watched in horror as he crossed one leg over my torso and before I could protest he leaned down and lifted me off the floor in one swift motion like I weighed nothing. “let go of me!“ I yelled as he placed me on the bed. “if you dare to touch me again I will scream and get you sued for s****l assault.“ “that would not be possible love.“ he said as he brushed a strand of hair from my forehead. “I own this entire facility, I would never send my wife to a place where I don't have full control.“ he explained and the helplessness I felt in that moment was an entirely new feeling. “call me your wife again and I will rip your eyes clean out of their sockets.“ I warned him through my teeth. He grabbed my chin an tilted my face up and I could look at him directly in his eyes as he said. “I would love to see you try.“ I tilted my head down and attempted to bite his finger that held my chin but he was quicker and let go of me before my teeth came in contact with his flesh. He was lucky because I would have definitely drawn blood. “I can see your memories have not returned.“ he said and I gave him a blank stare. “you can only hope that I have the patience to wait for them to come back.“ He had that knowing smile on his face.
