Luca Romano had just arrived at his wife’s office, his heart pounding in anticipation. He had requested to see her, eager to share a personal moment. However, the receptionist informed him that she was in a meeting with Daniel Hayes, and for the time being, he would have to wait. Though initially frustrated, Luca sat in silence, his thoughts racing. A few minutes later, he saw Daniel coming out of her office, his posture cold and distant. Luca hesitated, but his determination to see Sophia pushed him forward.
As he walked toward the door, Daniel’s eyes met his, filled with scorn and disdain. To Daniel, Luca was nothing more than an ordinary "poppa" — a man who didn’t belong in the world of success and sophistication that Sophia now inhabited. Luca felt the weight of Daniel's judgment, but he refused to back down.
“Hello, Mr. Daniel Hayes. It’s good to meet you again,” Luca greeted, his voice steady but tinged with a hint of nervousness. Daniel, however, didn’t even acknowledge him with a nod. Instead, he gave Luca a dismissive look and subtly gestured toward the door, signaling for him to leave. The disdain in Daniel’s gaze was palpable, as if Luca’s very presence was an affront to the world Sophia had built. Luca’s heart sank as he walked past, feeling smaller with every step.
The encounter with Daniel had drained the joy he once felt. He had come to Sophia’s office with good intentions, to congratulate her on her company reaching a new milestone. Yet, the weight of Daniel’s judgment and the coldness of the moment made him feel out of place. Still, Luca refused to let this sour his intentions. He took a deep breath and forged ahead, determined to see Sophia.
He knocked at the door, his hand trembling slightly, and Sophia’s voice rang out from the other side, instructing him to come in.
As Luca entered, he was greeted with a cool, almost indifferent look from Sophia. Her eyes flickered briefly with something unreadable, but then her expression shifted to one of irritation.
“What are you doing here, Luca?” she asked, her voice sharp. “Can’t you see this is my workplace? This is a professional environment, unlike anything you're used to. You belong at home, handling the house and its activities. You don’t fit in a place like this, so please be mindful about coming here in the future,” she added, her tone bitter.
Luca felt his chest tighten, the sting of her words cutting deeper than he had anticipated. He had come here with a heart full of pride for her achievements, yet now he stood before her, feeling like an intruder in her world.
“I’m really sorry if you think I’ve come here without notifying you, but I heard that your company had reached a major milestone by becoming one of the top companies in Willowbrook. I just wanted to come and officially congratulate you for your dedication to the success of the company,” Luca said, his smile struggling to stay in place. He watched Sophia, hoping for some trace of warmth, but all he saw was a flicker of disgust in her eyes.
“Look here, Luca,” Sophia’s voice broke through his thoughts, her gaze unwavering. “I’m fed up with you. You see, this marriage is over. Like you said, my company has reached a new milestone, and I don’t want to be seen with someone like you. I want a man who is on the same level as me, someone I can be proud of. Someone who will support me as I rise. And you, Luca, can never be that man. So let’s end this.”
Her words were like a dagger to his heart. Luca could feel his world crumbling, the future he had imagined with Sophia slipping through his fingers. He stood frozen for a moment, the weight of her declaration suffocating him.
Luca struggled to make sense of it all. “Are you saying we should end our marriage of three years just because you’ve reached a new milestone and believe I haven’t contributed to the success of your company?” he asked, his voice trembling with both disbelief and hurt. His eyes locked onto hers, searching for any sign that this was a mistake, that things could somehow be fixed.
“Yes, Luca, you heard me right. It’s over,” Sophia said, her voice colder now, devoid of any softness. “You’ve always been a burden to me. You haven’t contributed anything to my success. Instead, you’ve caused trouble for me and my family. Everyone thinks I shouldn’t be around you, and now I understand why. We are clearly not a good match. It’s better to end it now.”
Luca’s chest felt heavy as he processed her words. His mind raced, trying to find any logical explanation, but there was none. The pain in his chest intensified as he realized the woman he had once adored was no longer the same. She had made up her mind, and nothing he could say would change it.
As he tried to come to terms with the devastation, Sophia picked up her phone with a practiced ease and instructed her assistant to prepare the divorce papers. “Have them delivered to my office immediately,” she said, her voice firm.
A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door. The secretary entered, holding the divorce papers, and handed them to Sophia without a word. Sophia signed them quickly and handed them to Luca, her expression unreadable.
“You should also sign the papers. I’ve already signed mine, so be a gentleman and sign yours. Let’s not drag this out any longer. I want this marriage to end, and it would do you good if you sign these papers,” Sophia said, her voice void of any emotion as she handed Luca the pen.
Luca stared at the papers in his hands, the weight of his decision settling over him. He could barely comprehend the fact that this was happening. He had never imagined a day would come when Sophia would want a divorce, but here he was, forced to face reality. He had endured so much for her, for them, but now it seemed like it had all been in vain. Slowly, he signed the papers, the finality of it crashing down on him. With a heavy heart, he turned and walked out of the office, his anger boiling under the surface.
Sophia watched him leave, her heart heavy but resolute. She wasn’t sure if she was doing the right thing, but she knew that it was too late to turn back now. She had made her decision, and there was no going back.
As soon as he left, she picked up the phone again and called her mother and brother, instructing them to remove Luca’s things from the house. “It’s done,” she said, her voice steady. “We’re done.”
“This is the best news I’ve heard today!” Stephanie exclaimed over the phone. “Finally, you’ve come to your senses. You can see now that there’s no way you and Lucas could ever be a good match. I’ll help move his things out of the house,” she added, her voice filled with glee. “I’ll do it all.”
Sophia couldn’t help but smile a little, her heart lightening as she felt the weight of her decision finally lifting.
