“Are you serious right now, Newman?!” Jackson yells behind me and I groan, deciding to ignore him and keep walking.
‘He’s just your basic asshole, Alex. Let it go. Keep walking.’ I tell myself, clutching the books to my chest.
Why did I decide to take this route to class? I knew how abandoned this area is and I knew these jocks always hang out here. But I was already late and I desperately needed that smoke after lunch break. There are two paths to get to the Math block from the cafeteria, one connects the two buildings via the terrace that everyone takes and another is a footpath through a wooded area. The only people who come on this path are stoners and couples looking for a make out spot.
“Come on, Alex. One date, man.” He comes and stands before me, looking down at me. I take a deep breath,
“I’ve told you before, Jackson. I’m gay. I like girls.” I snap, glaring up at him. His grey eyes shine with mirth as one of his friends makes a derogatory comment that I ignore.
“And I’ve told you before, Alex. I can turn you straight. You just haven’t found the right guy yet.” I clench my fist so as to not knock his teeth out. I hate this statement so much. It’s the most perverted and homophobic thing you can ever say.
“Look, Jackson… I am already late for class. I don’t have time for this.” I dodge him and start walking to class but he catches my wrist and pulls me back. My back collides with a tree trunk and my books fall to the ground. My eyes widen as I look up at him. There was something so animalistic in his eyes that for a second I don’t even recognize the boy I went to school with since kindergarten. Something so feral that it was enough to knock the breath out of me.
“She said no, Michaels. Leave her alone.” A voice reverberates through the woods and Jackson freezes up, his grip on me loosening a bit. I take this opportunity to push him away and look towards the source of the noise. There standing just a few feet away from us is Rayne Sterling. The leather clad girl walks over to us, her electric blue eyes literally boring holes into Jackson.
A buzzing sensation runs through me as she comes closer to us and I gasp. I have never talked to her one on one but whenever we are in the same room together or in the same space, this same feeling zaps me. I suddenly feel strong and as if I can take on the entire world. The strength that courses through me is something I have never felt before. I chalked it up to being attracted to her because who wouldn’t be?
I know staring is rude but I can’t help it. Rayne’s ethereally beautiful. Her gorgeous black hair flows down her back like a waterfall. Her electric blue eyes look like thunderstorms. Her sharp features look like they could cut glass.
She joined our school at the beginning of the year and her mysterious and private nature immediately made her the center of attention. Not that she gives a s**t about what anyone says about her. Rayne has managed to amass a cult following and girls and guys alike literally die to even be looked at by her. Other than hanging out with her current hookup, I don’t think she has any friends in school.
“Rayne.” Jackson acknowledges her and I can see a hint of fear in his eyes. And respect too.
“Jackson, you need to learn to take no for an answer, my guy. Or the consequences won’t be so good the next time.” Before any of us can comprehend anything, Rayne has Jackson pressed up against the same tree as me with his arm twisted behind his back.
Blood rushes through me and I can feel the feeling getting even more prominent. I clench my fists and jaw from screaming out loud. It’s like lightning is rushing through my veins. I feel powerful enough to uproot a tree. Like I can crush a skull with my bare hands. I shut my eyes tightly as my heart hammers through my chest. My ears are ringing really loudly. A tear makes its way down my cheek and I just want this to stop.
“Alex? Are you with me?” The feeling fades as soon as it had arrived and I gasp in a deep breath, looking at the electric blue eyes staring at me with concern.
“Yeah… I, uh, I’m fine.” I mumble, shaking my head. I look around to notice that all the boys have left and it’s just Rayne and I here now, “Thank you for helping me. He has never gotten physical before.” She grimaces as I rub my wrist.
“May I?” Her hand is extended towards mine in an unsure gesture. I gulp, not knowing if I should let her touch me but something in me tells me that she can be trusted. So, I nod. She takes my hand and holds up my wrist, studying the skin there. The grimace on her lips widens and I frown at my wrist. I can tell that it’s going to bruise in a couple of hours. “This is going to bruise and turn purple.” I roll my eyes.
“No s**t, Sherlock.” I snort. She looks up at me with her eyes blazing a brighter blue. Almost… an inhuman bright. Fear lances through my chest, “I-I mean… I know. I-I didn’t mean to offend you.” I avert my eyes to the ground and bite my lip, hoping that she won’t be very mad. I don’t think I can defend myself against her. Being in a small town we have one gym and I have seen her beat up a punching bag. There’s no way I can protect myself against that.
A soft chuckle makes me look back at her and her eyes seem to be shining with mirth.
“I am not mad at you. I am pissed at those guys. Jackson should have never put his hands on you. Or any girls.” She adds as an afterthought, “I should’ve killed him.” A growl rumbles in her chest and a feeling emerges in my chest. I want to take away whatever ails this girl. I frown at my absurd reaction and avert my eyes to my books that are on the ground now.
“It’s shitty I know but killing them is not an answer. You’ll only end up in jail.” I say, pulling away from her and walking to the books on the ground, “Then who will save the other damsels in distress?” She flashes a small smile before walking over to me and bending down and picking my books.
“Well, true. If all the damsels are as pretty as you, I have no problem saving them.” She winks while handing me my books. I laugh at her corniness as I accept them.
“No one would have thought Rayne Sterling would be this corny.” I snort and she throws her head back laughing and I swear to God, there isn’t a more beautiful sound than that. It’s like wind chimes but a little deeper and huskier. Like a warm cup of coffee on a winter day.
“Don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation to keep.” She says, her voice having dropped below 0 degrees. It sends a shiver down my spine and I nod rapidly. She flashes me a lopsided smirk that screams trouble, “Well… I believe you have an AP Calculus class to get to.” My eyes widen and I check my watch.
“s**t! I am so late!” I curse, “Thank you so much, Rayne. I owe you one.” She shrugs her shoulder as if it is no big deal.
“Anytime you need help, just yell and I’ll be there.” She sends me a salute before turning around and starts walking towards the woods. “See you around, Newman!”
I can’t help the smile that lights up my face as I start making my way to my class. A thought makes me stop in my tracks and send a chill down my spine.
‘How did she know which class I had?’
(Unknown POV)
“The prophecy is set into motion. She needs to be protected. I need you on Earth.” The man in the throne orders, still staring out the window. The tension in the room is palpable as his wife rests a hand on his shoulder.
“We are trusting her safety in your hands, Lieutenant. Don’t let us down.” The woman fixes the young lady in front of her with a steady glare. Her eyes, a raven black.
The young woman in a head to toe black huntress outfit nods solemnly. If there is anything the woman is known for, it’s taking her job seriously. She has risen up the ranks for this very moment. This very assignment. Finally after waiting for 400 years, her wishes have come true.
“You won’t regret your decision, Your Majesties.” She says, flashing her sharp fangs as her eyes shine an ethereal bright blue.
