CHAPTER 3

THIRD PERSON POV:

Crystal couldn't understand if she should be excited about the proposal or be worried. She just met this man who had a split personality, he was arrogant, too composed and a gentle man. He's handsome no doubt she thought to herself. She knew marriage was a commitment and she didn't know if she was ready for that commitment, she believed in love as she had seen her dad love her stepmom before he died and she had always dreamed to marry some one she loved. How was she going to marry a man she doesn't even know anything about, only that her dad was owing him a large amount of money and had transferred his field to Jake's name. 'Mom is there anything you want me to do for you?' she asked in a rush immediately Rhea entered her room. 'No Crystal, i came to talk to you' she gestured Crystal to sit.

'What happened at your interview today? you seemed down when you came back sweetie or didn't you get the job?' Rhea asked sitting beside her daughter and patting her hair. 'No mom, am okay and the job' she stammers looking for a lie to tell her, 'yes the job, they said they would get back to me so don't worry mom'. Rhea knew her daughter very well and she was a terrible liar but she also knew Crystal will prefer to keep her problems to herself without telling anyone about it. She decided to keep her questions but just be supportive instead. 'Mom have you ever thought of me getting married?' Crystal asked as she leaned more on her mom's lap so she could feel more of her mom's hand on her hair. 'Hmmmm, Why asking this question or did Xander ask you to marry him?' Rhea asked with a frown on her face but still patting her daughter's hair.

'No mom Xander didn't ask me to marry him, i just want to know what marriage is all about and what makes marriage important'. Crystal knew her mom never liked Xander even though he was her best friend. 'Sweet heart are you in love?' Rhea asked with excitement forgetting her daughter's head was resting on her lap.

'Ouch mom, no am not in love' she replied sarcastically as she adjusted her self after falling off. 'Mom stop getting too excited and your daughter almost died here' she laughed. 'Am sorry sweet heart, i just got super happy for you' she said picking her daughter up. 'Mom i told you i just want to know, that's all and and not in love'  she sat on her bed. She always wanted this fun mom and not the lost in thoughts mom. 

'Mom am really happy you are having fun, i miss that side of you' Crystal said with sadness. Rhea couldn't help but imagine how long it had been since they talked with giggles, she had made her daughter miss motherly love. 'Am sorry sweet heart, i haven't been there for you' she hugged her daughter. 

'Now now mom, don't ruin this moment with tears and you are squishing me tight' Rhea released her. 'So mom, tell me what makes makes marriage important' she asked as she rested back on her mom's lap. 'Hmm, you really want to know. Okay marriage comes with a lot of responsibility and sacrifices, when you say those words i do to your partner, you should be ready to protect your partner from anyone or anything that will harm your partner. And in marriage you should learn three important things, love, trust and understanding'.

'Wow mom, is that what made you and dad relationship special?. Rhea knew her daughter question was bound to be asked. 'Special....maybe but we also had our ups and downs sweetie but the love we had made us look past those' she replied.

'Love...what if i don't love the person i want to marry?' Crystal asked as she sits up. 'You don't love that person? there has to be a pull or chemistry between the both of you' Rhea answered. Crystal didn't know if she felt a pull towards him, 'i shouldn't accept his offer' Crystal thought to herself.

'Okay sweet heart, time for dinner' Rhea announced walking towards the door but falls down holding her chest. 'Mom whats wrong' she rushes to Rhea's side, shaking her. 'Mom please wake up' holding her up. 'Hospital, my phone, where the h*ll is my phone' she screamed.

'Doctor how is my mom' Crystal asked with anxiousness. 'Miss Crystal do you have your mom's previous medical report here' he asked. 'Yes i do' handing the report from her bag. He looks through it and sighs 'your mom needs to under go an operation as quickly as possible, what i see here is she has been taking medications but those medication was to suppress her pain. The medications cant work forever, it only has its limited time and that limited time expired. She needs that operation done as soon as possible or she is going to have a limited time' he replied. 'Am sorry' he continued. Crystal could feel her world crumbling down and she felt helpless, she had wished this would come later after she had paid off her father's debt. 'How much are we talking about doc?' she asked with a sniff. 'We are talking about 1.5 to 2 million' he answered. Crystal knew it was going to be expensive but she wasn't really ready for more responsibility. 'I understand this is too much for you but i will suggest you quickly arrange for her to be operated' the doctor warned. 'Yeah i will, thanks. Can i see her now?' she asked. 'Yes you can' he said

'Hey mom' Crystal announced herself as she enters her mom's hospital room. 'Hi sweetie, why the long face? come here' Rhea answered in a low and slow tone. She tries to sit up but was stopped by the pain in her chest. 'Mom be careful please' as she helps her lie down back on the bed. 'So why the sad face? what did the doctor say' she asked holding Crystal's hands. 'You need to undergo a surgery very soon' she answered. 'hmm,how much does the surgery cost?' she knew that was the reason her daughter's face was gloomy. 'Mom don't worry about that, just be ready for the surgery' she stood up to adjust her mom's hospital robe but was held back by her mom. 'Crystal you don't have to take up all this responsibility, lets just go home and live our lives normal and peaceful, i will continue taking my medication and all will be fine' Rhea begged. 

'Normal and peaceful!......no mom, those medications ain't working anymore. If you don't under go that surgery, you gonna die mom, die!......' she said with so much pain in her voice. 'I can't keep letting you forget you own a life while you are trying to sort my life, you should be living your own life not paying debts you didn't owe. Please sweet heart, lets just go home and see what life brings to us' Rhea pleaded more. She just couldn't see her daughter going through so much pain for her. 'Yeah, its really easy saying it mom since you not the one going to be left alone, so you won't understand. I already lost dad and you want me to lose you too!.......' she answered.

'Crystal that's not what i mean, i just can't bear it when you keep paying all this bills and debts' Rhea explained. 'Am not complaining mom, am not. please excuse me, i need to make a call' as she leaves the room with her mom calling her back.

Crystal walked to the chair kept in the hospital passage and sat down to cry, she knew she was hard on her mom and she was sorry for that. She brought out her phone and dialed the number on the gold plated card. She placed the phone on her ears listening to the ringing, and she heard the voice from the other side 'Hello'. She sighs as she replies 'Can we talk'.
