Chapter 2

As he was about to put his phone back into his pocket,a lady bumped into him. Matthew looked up and saw Amanda’s secretary, Selina. She sneered, “Isn’t it too early for you to get lost in thoughts just because you got dumped like trash?" Matthew didn’t even care about her. He ignored her and walked away. Selina looked pained. She entered the living room with annoyance. Meanwhile, as soon as Matthew stepped out of the villa, a convoy of military and exotic cars suddenly stopped right in front of him. An army of soldiers were led by Lieutenant Varg, a cold-looking officer, along with men in suits led by Chairman Ashford, the head of the Stratford company in the city, jumped down from the vehicles. They all ran to Matthew and fell to their knees. “We honor you, Lord Matthew! Even on our last breath, we will never stop serving you, the invincible War King!” Matthew frowned, looking at all of them, before he turned to Chairman Ashford, the one he just texted a few minutes ago. “What’s the meaning of this, Ashford?” he asked, his voice cold. The Lieutenant sensed the anger in his leader’s tone. His body shook as he bowed lower, fear burning in his chest. “Forgive me, my lord,” Varg said hurriedly. “You are the invincible War King, the Unconquerable Warrior whose name made hundreds of thousands of elite soldiers surrender even before you reach them. If not for you… Eldoria would not be at peace. You… you are meant to be worshipped and deserve more honor!” As he was about to put his phone back into his pocket,a lady bumped into him. Matthew looked up and saw Amanda’s secretary, Selina. She sneered, “Isn’t it too early “Cut the crap, Ashford. Now, send the soldiers back to wherever they came from.” Matthew was the famous, mysterious War King of Eldoria, but nobody really knew his true identity. “Yes, my lord!” He turned to the soldiers, "Go!" They returned to their cars and drove away. Then Matthew looked at Ashford. “Let’s go. We have a lot of important things to deal with.” Ashford hurriedly opened the back passenger door of a black Rolls Royce among the group of cars, and Matthew stepped inside. The chairman entered into the driver’s seat with Ashford sat next to him. As they were leaving, one of the villa’s security guards, who had been standing there in shock, ran into the living room. “Madam! Miss Vandermere! Matthew is leaving in a convoy of fancy cars!” he shouted, almost panicking. His eyes were wide, still confused. Amanda, Selina and Ivy, all looking shocked. “Are you sure you’re not drinking again? Maybe you’re seeing things!” the third woman snapped at him. “I’m not seeing things, ma’am! The cars are still outside, you can go check if you want!” the guard tried to convince them, voice shaking a little. Amanda couldn’t hold it anymore. She barked at him, “What rubbish! Get out and stop saying nonsense here!” The guard felt embarrassed, and ran outside as fast as he could. He felt really bad… It hurt that they didn’t believe him at all. At this moment, Selina spoke in the living room, “Miss Vandermere, now that we have Mr. Andrew backing us, we have a chance to attend the Stratford Charity dinner tonight with Bellington Family. Also, there will be an announcement for the company’s big project too.” Amanda’s face lit up. She turned to her daughter, whose face stayed blank. “That’s good news. As long as we will work with the Stratford group soon, and with Andrew helping us, maybe we can get a little share from the Stratford Family Company big project too.” Amanda couldn’t stop herself. “Haha! I can see the Vandermere family climbing the social ladder very soon!” But meanwhile, her mind was all over the place. Even though she was determined to grow her career, she couldn’t stop feeling… bad about the divorce. Inside the Rolls, Matthew sat quietly in the passenger seat. Ashford leaned forward and spoke quickly. “My lord… since the Vandermere family happen to be ingrate… should I revoke all the support we secretly gave them?” “No, it’s not necessary," Matthew said calmly, without looking at him. Ashford blinked, surprised. “My lord… I dare not question your opinion. But the Vandermere family just cut ties with you, despite everything you did for them. If not for you… they would still be insignificant in the business world.” Matthew turned and looked out the window. “Everything I did for that family… it wasn’t for them. It was all because of grandpa, Harold Vandermere.” The chairman fell silent. Twenty years ago, Amanda’s grandpa was just a butler in the Stones family in the city. One day, enemies attacked the city. The family… they were the main target. When the enemies got into the family’s assets, the Stones villa was burnt down to ashes. The family was tied inside… they all burned with it. Except Matthew. He escaped… thanks to Harold. That old man risked his life for him. Matthew vowed to avenge his parent's death. At eighteen, he went and joined the military. Seven years later, he retired as a War King, conquering many wars and keeping the county at peace. Immediately after retiring, he found out the old man was still alive… but his health was weak and unbalanced. All because of his good heart, risking everything for Matthew that day. Matthew returned to the city the same day… to repay the favor. And with the old man’s help, he could face his father’s anonymous enemies. But on the first day Harold saw Matthew, he was so happy… he married him to his beloved granddaughter that same day. On the same night, Harold got very sick and fell into a coma. This made Matthew even more angry. He worked on the old man’s small company and… in a short time, he turned it into a success. The change happened pretty fast, with help from the chairman, the owner of Andrew’s company, who secretly made ways for the Vandemere family corporation to grow. The chairman had been loyal to Matthew since the day Matthew saved him and his men from being kidnapped by a deadly gang… all by himself. When the chairman found out that Matthew married into Vandmere’s family, he was ready to do anything to help their company. With his help, Matthew managed to lift the Vandmere family corporation up the social ladder. After a long silence, the chairman finally asked, while driving, “My lord… where should I go now?” Matthew raised his head, calm as ever. “Imperia Villa.”
