Mattew let out a slow breath and ran a hand through his hair, as if trying to clear his thoughts. When he finally turned toward Delilah, his voice came out low and steady, but distant.
“You shouldn’t waste your time on me,” he said plainly.
Delilah blinked, clearly caught off guard. “What did you just say?”
Mattew’s jaw tightened. He already regretted speaking, but the words were out now, and taking them back felt harder than saying them in the first place. Still, he forced himself to continue.
“You heard me,” he said quietly. “You should stop whatever you think this is between us.”
Her expression shifted immediately. Confusion mixed with frustration crossed her face as she stepped closer.
