betrayal

Ava didn't turn back this time. Instead, she walked straight down the remaining stairs, her footsteps loud enough to make them both look up. The softness vanished from their faces the moment they saw her expression."Don't,"Ava said sharply when Evelyn opened her mouth to speak. "I heard you. Last night. Every word". The color drained from Evelyn's face, and Mark stood slowly, his jaw tightening. Ava's' voice trembled despite her effort to stay strong." You didn't think I deserved to know? You just let me find out like that — listening outside a door like some stranger?" Mark tried to explain, his voice strained, admitting they didn't mean for it to happen this way, that feelings had grown slowly and neither of them knew how to tell her. Evelyn stepped forward, tears in her eyes, confessing that they had tried to fight it, that they never wanted to hurt her. "You never meant to hurt me? Really, for God's sakes, I am your daughter, your best friend. You want to tell me something, you just simply say it, you don't hide it.I HAD EVERY RIGHT TO KNOW, but no, you didn't care. You thought you were protecting me. Well, look where that got you caused more pain." Hearing the pain in her voice, Mark and Evelyn stood there, heads bowed. They couldn't bare looking at her. They felt too guilty. The one thing they never wanted to do was hurt her. They tried to talk to her, but explanations only made it worse. Ava shook her head, anger spilling over." You're my best friend," she said to Evelyn, her voice breaking, "And you're my dad, how could you hide this from me?" Her words hung heavily in the air. Mark insisted nothing had happened before Ava was asleep, that they had planned on talking to her together, honestly. Evelyn added that "What we feel is unexplainable, but it's real, it's safe, and I'm so sorry that we kept it from you, but we can't ignore these feelings anymore." The room was filled with raised voices, hurt layering over hurt, until Ava couldn't stand it anymore." I can't do this," she said, grabbing her jacket." I just can't be OK with this. It's too much, and it's not fair on me to have this thrown at me. I need to be alone". The front door slammed behind her, leaving Mark and Evelyn standing there in silence, the weight of what they'd done settling heavy between them. Hours passed by since Ava left the house. It was silent, every ticking second making the worry grow heavier. Mark paced in the living room while Evelyn sat rigid on the edge of the sofa tapping her mug of tea, staring down at her phone wanting it to ring. They exchanged a glance between them, and just as Mark reached for his coat, the front door flew open. Ava swept inside without looking at either of them, her face closed off, eyes burning with anger. She brushed past them, boots thudding up the stairs, and a moment later her bedroom door slammed shut. No words. No explanation. Just the echo of her anger, leaving Mark and Evelyn standing there, knowing the silence hurt worse than anything she could have said. Evelyn stood there for a long moment, her chest tight with guilt, before finally turning toward the stairs. Each step felt heavier than the last. When she reached Ava's door, she hesitated, her hand hovering before she gently knocked." Ava...please can we get talk?" Her voice was softer now, stripped of defensiveness. After a few seconds of silence, she added, "I know you're angry. You have every right to be." When there was still no answer, she swallowed hard. " I never meant to hurt you. If you want me to... Ill leave. I'll step away from both of you. I don't want to come in between you and your dad. I just want you to know how much i love you both and how incredible you are and sorry, I really hope you can forgive me". Inside, Ava's voice finally came through the door, muffled but steady. "You think leaving fixes it"? The words cut deeper than shouting would have. Evelyn pressed her forehead lightly against the wood, tears slipping down her cheeks. "No," she admitted. it doesn't fix it. But you matter more to me than anything else. If walking away is what you need to feel okay again, then I'll do it. The hallway fell quiet again, the weight of her offer hanging between them, fragile and painful. After a long stretch of silence, the soft click of the lock broke the tension. The door opened just a few inches, and Ava's eyes met Evelyn's, red but calmer now. "Come in," she said quietly, stepping back. Evelyn entered slowly, as if afraid the moment might disappear. They sat on the edge of the bed, the space between them thick with everything unsaid. Ava twisted her hands together. I'm hurt, she admitted. Not because you love him.... but because I felt shut out, like I was the last to know. Evelyn nodded, tears falling freely now. She explained how it had grown unexpectedly, how they had both struggled with it, and how terrified she'd been of losing Ava. You're my family, she whispered. I never wanted to risk that. Ava let out a shaky breath before finally learning into her, and Evelyn wrapped her arms around her carefully, like something fragile." I don't want you to leave," Ava murmured. I just need time...and honestly.no more secrets." Evelyn promised her that from now on there would be none. They talked for what felt like hours—about boundaries, about how things might look, about making sure Ava never felt pushed aside. It wasn't perfect, and it wasn't easy, but by the time Evelyn stood to leave the room, the anger had softened into something steadier. Not a complete understanding yet — but the beginning of acceptance.
