Chapter 24: Currents Beneath the Surface

743 Words
When Gene awoke again, it was deep into the night. His body still ached, but his mind felt slightly clearer, the fog of fever and pain receding just enough to allow awareness to return. The door creaked open gently. A slender figure slipped inside, moving with careful, almost reverent steps. Gene squinted against the faint moonlight streaming through the window and finally recognized her—Ling Yue. She looked thinner, her eyes rimmed with red from lack of sleep, and the carefully pinned-up hair of earlier now hung loose in a few strands. Yet, despite the disheveled appearance, her gaze was filled with concern and a trace of guilt. “You’re finally awake,” she said softly, stepping closer to the bedside, her voice quivering slightly. “I was so worried…” “I… I’m fine,” Gene rasped, trying to speak, only to feel his lungs burn with every breath. Pain lanced through his chest with each word. “Don’t speak,” Ling Yue chided gently but firmly. “You’re still severely injured.” She held a spoon filled with water, pressing it carefully to his lips, ready to feed him sip by sip. At that moment, a knock sounded at the door. “Who is it?” Ling Yue asked impatiently, not wanting her focus to be broken. “It’s me, Junior Brother,” a middle-aged man’s voice called from outside. It was Tian Tongzi. Ling Yue’s patience thinned. “Second Junior Brother, what is it?” she replied sharply, not moving toward the door. “Junior Sister, has the young man awakened yet?” Tian Tongzi persisted. “What do you really want?” Ling Yue snapped, irritation evident in her voice. Tian Tongzi’s tone softened but remained firm. “Junior Sister, Master Luyan wishes to see you.” “I will not see him!” Ling Yue said decisively, her voice rising in frustration. She returned to Gene’s side, attempting to feed him more water. Tian Tongzi sighed, his patience thinning. “I understand your feelings, but the situation has escalated greatly. Someone must handle the aftermath, and Junior Brother Tianyu deserves an explanation.” The mention of Feng Tianyu caused Ling Yue’s eyes to blaze. She sprang up and threw the door open with a force that startled even Tian Tongzi. “Explanation? What about Gene?! He saved my life, and yet you treat him so poorly! If you won’t see justice done for him, then I will! Feng Tianyu is the one I struck—what are you planning to do, arrest me?!” Her voice, sharp with anger, cut through the quiet night like a blade. “Junior Sister, please calm yourself…” Tian Tongzi said awkwardly, trying to placate her. “Tianyu is gravely injured and bedridden; any accountability can wait. Master sent me because…” “Gravely injured? You dare call him injured? He is the one with shattered ribs and internal wounds, not me! He almost killed Gene!” Ling Yue’s fury boiled over, her voice trembling with outrage. “Go back and tell my father—I will not leave! I will not let them commit injustice under the guise of gratitude!” “Junior Sister, your words are harsh…” “I am furious! Leave now!” Ling Yue slammed the door shut before he could continue. She returned to Gene’s side, chest heaving, the remnants of her rage subsiding into a deep, gnawing concern. She saw the pain etched across Gene’s face as the movement had tugged at his injuries, and all her anger instantly melted into guilt and worry. “I… I’m sorry… it’s my fault you were dragged into this,” she murmured softly, her voice choked, eyes glistening once more. Gene looked at her, his heart a swirl of emotion—shock, relief, and admiration. He realized, for the first time, the depth of her courage and loyalty: Ling Yue had risked herself, wielding her sword against Feng Tianyu to protect him. The resentment and bitterness he had felt from her “abandonment” now faded, replaced by a profound recognition of her strength and unwavering commitment. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Gene allowed himself to feel a fragile warmth of safety, knowing that, for now, at least, he was in the hands of someone willing to fight for him—even against the might and pride of the Zhenhun Alliance itself.
