Episode 9: The Call of the Wild

605 Words
After hours of hiking, Lucas finally suggested, “Why don’t we transform? Let our wolves roam for a bit.” Knox’s heart raced at the thought. There was nothing quite like the freedom of running as a wolf, feeling the earth beneath him in a primal way. He relished every chance to showcase his abilities to Lucas, a friendly rivalry that had always pushed him to be better, to prepare for the responsibilities he knew awaited him as alpha. With a nod, they stepped off the trail into a secluded clearing, the air buzzing with the scent of pine and damp earth. They stood facing each other, an unspoken understanding passing between them. Knox closed his eyes, allowing the transformation to take hold. The familiar rush of energy surged through him as his bones shifted and reformed, muscles rippling beneath a thick coat of fur. When he opened his eyes again, the world appeared sharper, more vibrant. Lucas followed suit, his own transformation fluid and practiced. The two wolves stood side by side, dark and light fur blending harmoniously, ready to embrace the wild. They tore through the underbrush, the dips and rises of the mountain beneath their paws connecting them to the ancient magic that flowed through the land. This area was not entirely devoid of humans, but those who ventured here had long since lost touch with the magic of the realm. Most were oblivious to the rich tapestry of existence just beyond their sight—small human villages nestled within a world that thrived on enchantment and mystery. As they ran, leaves crunched beneath their powerful strides, the autumn air filled with the crisp scent of decay. They startled deer and other woodland creatures, reveling in the wild abandon of their chase. The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm golden hue across the landscape, urging them forward as they searched for a cliff where they could stop and gaze at the stars, just like they had done since childhood. As dusk settled in, painting the sky with deep purples and oranges, Knox felt a twinge of melancholy tugging at his heart. The weight of loss hung heavy in the air since Lucas’s father had passed away. He remembered the day vividly—Lucas’s sorrowful eyes, the way his shoulders slumped as he took on the role of protector for his family. Knox admired his friend for his strength but hated seeing the toll it took on him. “Hey,” he thought, trying to convey comfort through their bond. Lucas glanced at him, his wolf’s eyes reflecting the dimming light. The boyish charm he had always possessed was still alive, flickering like a candle in the wind, even amidst the changes. Knox admired him for not letting the burden of responsibility extinguish his spirit completely. They finally spotted a cliff overlooking the sprawling valley below. The view was breathtaking; the stars began to blink awake in the vast expanse of the sky, twinkling like diamonds scattered across black velvet. They leaped onto the rocky outcrop, the cool stone beneath their paws grounding them. As they settled down, Knox nudged Lucas playfully, an instinctive gesture that drew a deep, joyful growl from his friend. In that moment, the weight of the world seemed to lift, and for a few blissful breaths, they were just two young wolves, free to explore the wonders of their world. Though the lingering shadows of loss still surrounded them, the bond between them pulsed with the energy of their youth—an unbreakable thread woven through laughter, adventure, and the promise of the stars above.
