Gulls flew above the ships anchored in the harbor. Block and tackle squealed under the strain of the loads, and the longshoremen swore and complained about the weight of the heavy cargo. On the wharf, Reese, wearing a long canvas duster, moved along the pier toward John Lundy"s office. Lundy"s was busy with longshoremen moving cargo to the warehouse. Reese spotted a group of six men at the entrance to an alley. Though they were talking and laughing, each was positioned so he could watch the back of the other. Reese slowed and began spotting other lookouts. "They"re not going to be caught sleeping again," he thought.
