Crow and Virgil were three streets over when they heard the police whistles. Police officers began moving toward the sounds of shouting and muffled gunshots. San Francisco"s mounted police soon appeared, pushing through the crowded streets. In a rush, the streets were filled with panicked people and the sounds of shop doors slamming shut. “Get behind the mounted officers,” shouted Virgil. The mounted police blazed a trail through the crowd. The horses shied from side to side, the riders talking to their mounts reassuring them, keeping them under control. As the crowd began to thin, Crow and Virgil were able to walk beside the horsemen.
