THE GRANDSONSIn the little office of Blunt & Blunt, Inc.—dealers in lumber, coal, lime, and cement—Ken Blunt finished checking an invoice, thrust the paper into a pigeonhole of his desk, and half turned in his chair to stare out the window. Rain, in a steady drizzle, had been falling since morning. The minute drops made vertical lines against a mountainous pyramid of coal, beyond which stretched pile after pile of lumber. A team of horses splashed through the mud, pulling an empty wagon. With monotonous rattle and clatter a mechanical contrivance elevated coal from a freight car to the top of the black pyramid. Sliding and rolling, a chunk of coal hurtled down the pile and leaped across the roadway. One of the horses shied violently, and the teamster swore loudly and jerked at his reins. A
