Mila stood behind the counter contemplating her life. Do I need this damn job to pay for my studies? Learning the menu was the least of her worries. Her frustration began when a group of high schoolers came in. "Go on. You can do it. Here's your note pad," Lana said as she gave Mila a push. "Hi, I'm Mila and I'll be your waiter can I take your order," Mila said nervously. "You haven't even given us the menu yet and you want to take our order, seriously? Are you new here?" the girl said in an arrogant tone of voice. "Oh. yes. Sorry," Mila shrugged. The girls laughed at Mila. There laughter got louder each time Mila made a mistake. "Seriously, how slow can you be. You just a waiter. How hard is it not to f*ck up?" the girls laughed at there friend's snarky remark as Mila walked away. "Heres the menu. Can I get you anything to drink?" Mila said. "Yes, I would like a grande cuppicino with almond milk, no sugar, no cream. Did you get that?" the girl fussed. Her friends ordered simple drinks. Strawberry milkshake, chocolate milkshake and orange juice. Mila ran to the locker room almost out of breath. I'm sure I'm having a heart attack right now. Mila tried to calm herself down, but the pain in her chest kept getting worse. Stephanie walked in the locker room and found her flat on the ground. "Hey, hey, are you okay? Breath... Just breath." Stephanie kneeled down and grabbed Mila's hand between her hands. "I... Think.... I'm.... Hav...having...a heart attack,"Mila stuttered. " No. No. You having a panic attack. Don't worry, you'll be okay. I'm not new to this," Stephanie convinced her. Mila finally got back up from the floor and her breathing came back to normal. Mila felt more embarrassed about the thirteen year old girl humiliating her than her panic attack. "Hey, go out there and show those little bastards that you the adult,"Stephanie encouraged Mila. " They come in here all the time. Especially that witch Lexi. Ooh can I have a grande... Ooh can I have almond milk. The b***h pisses me off too," Stephanie mimicked her. "But seriously, don't let it get you down." "Thanks,"Mila smiled. Mila walked up to the table with their drinks, and placed the cuppicino purposefully by the wrong girl, and the milkshake by Lexi. "You cannot get a simple order right. I ordered the cuppicino. Arg,"Lexi rolled her eyes. " Oh my bad here you go- Aaaah, " Mila dropped the milkshake purposely on Lexi's lap. She let out the loudest scream. The entire Diner stared at them. Mila tried wiping up the table but the milkshake kept dripping on Lexi's lap. "Oh I'm so sorry, I'm such a klutz," Mila smirked. "Aaaah... This is Prada. You ruined my skirt," Lexi threw a tantrum. The rest of the girls gasped at the sight of Lexi's ruined skirt. "I do apologize." "We never coming back to this diner." The girls stormed off without paying for their drinks. Mila turned to Mary and felt ashamed. She didn't want Mary or the other staff members to think she's incompetent. Instead Mary laughed. "You'll fit right in Mila. Welcome to the diners club," Mary reached out to her and hugged her. The staff laughed and fussed about Lexi and her posh accent. "Aaah this is Prada," Stephanie and Lana teased. Mila felt ashamed for being awful, but in the same breath she felt like it needed to be done. Somebody needed to put that girl in her place. Mila soon started to get the hang of things. After working for four hours, Mila was exhausted. She took her lunch break in the back room by the canteen. She Reclined the chair and kicked her feet up. "This is the most exhausting day ever," she pouted. "Hey you should get you comfortable takkies. You'll be on your feet for hours," Lana sneaked up. "Oh my God! I didn't see you there," Mila said frightenly. "Sorry." Lana was a brunette, she had long curly hair. Shes been working at the diner for five years already. Her parents threw her out the house because she was a rebellious teenager. Therefore, she's been taking care of herself ever since. "So what brings you here Mila?" Lana said inquisitively. "Well, I need to pay for studies or else I'll be deregisterd." "What you studying?" "Dance." "What type of dance?" "Mostly ballet." "Don't you just get into a programme and get selected and s**t?" "No. Yes. If you lucky enough. But you need to pay for your spot. I'm doing it through the university; out of my own free will, not because I was selected." "Oh dang. That sucks. Good luck kid." Lana tapped Mila on her shoulder as a sign of comfort. Lana knew what its like fighting for survival. Mila chilled in the break room so that she could recuperate and figure her life out, but nothing inspirational came to mind. " I need to catch some sunlight," Mila said. She walked out the break room, and sat outside on one of the benches. The sunlight gave her energy. It made her feel warm and loved. I wish the earth could swallow me whole, she thought. She groveled her hand under chin while leaning on the table with her elbow, she was well on her way to taking a power nap. Then Stephanie walked out. "Do you smoke?" Stephanie said as she lit her cigarette. "No," Mila said with a her lips nervously tucked. "Cool. I respect that," Stephanie smiled. "Hey, thanks for what you did there inside for me." "No problem." "How did you know I was having a panic attack?" "My brother always gets them. So I'm well aware of what a panic attack looks like." "Oh. I'm sorry to hear that. How does he get over it?" "Yeah, no sweat, kiddo...mainly breathing exercises." "It must be tough." "Nah... Not quite. Did I mention that I'm a nurse too," "What!" "Yeah, let's go in our lunch is over." Stephanie was a red head, not by birth, but by choice. She's been through some difficulties in her life too, especially after getting fired from Morroco hospital. Despite their flaws, Mila felt comfortable around Stephanie and Lana. She felt like she's finally making some friends. Though they were a couple years older than her. Soon the clocked striked six and the Diner began filling up. Many people came out of work to have dinner. Many families came in too. Mila was scared but ready for a challenge. "Howdy Ma'am," a old white gentlemen greeted Stephanie as he c****d his cap backwards. "The usual, Steve?" Stephanie smirked. "You know me so damn well, little lady," Steve smiled back. "Who is this young lady?" "Now Steve be nice, she's our new waitress," Stephanie giggled. "Of course, I'm Steve," he said as he leaned his hand forward for handshake. "Mila," she smiled back and shook his hand. "That's a beautiful name," Steve continued. "Here your bacon, eggs, toast, beans, tomato and hot cup of coffee," Stephanie said as she put the plate infornt of Steve. "Thanks darling." Mila was confused by the interaction between Stephanie and Steven. She didn't want to intrude but she didn't want to be left out either. She then leaned into Lana and whispered: "Are they dating?" "No. That's just how customers interact. Sometimes they get a little smooch. Maybe more... If you know what I mean," Lana joked. "Okay. I think I get it," Mila carried on filling the coffee pot. The day seased into the night, and it was almost time to close up. Mila couldn't wait to get home. She needed to rest, her feet were sore, and her back was paining. A black Rolls Royce pulled up and the staff became uneasy. Four men stepped out the car. Each wearing suits. They majestically entered the diner. "Mary! We got company!" Lana yelled. "James prepare the cherry pie with extra cream. Bullet make sure the donuts are glazed this time with extra cinnamon. Stephanie, four coffees, no milk. Lana clean the table, and Mila kindly assist the gentleman." "YES MOTHER!" everybody yelled. What the hell is going on? Mila felt conflicted between Mary's demands and the gentleman that entered the Diner. Wait these are the same men that I saw at the club. "Hi, good evening. I'm Mila and I will be your server for the evening what can I get you gentleman?" Mila spoke without any hiccups. "Don't I know you?" the gentleman said. "I'm not sure, sir. Can I get you anything?"Mila tried to skip the awkwardness and hurried up with the order. " I'm sure I've seen you somewhere...ill have the usual. Mary knows. Thank you," he responded. " What about the rest of you gentleman?" Mila said. "Mary knows. Thank you." he said bluntly. He didn't have to be so f*****g rude. Mila sat behind the counter watching the gentleman devour their pie and donuts. She couldn't understand how Mary tolerated these mens behavior. "It's midnight. Why are these men so late here at the diner? Don't they know we close at twelve?" Mila said. "Oh sweety. You have a lot to learn. That is Zuko. As in King Zuko. The Mafia. That's his dad and uncles. They own almost half of the city. From Clubs to- businesses to- shopping malls, including this diner." Stephanie said while chewing the gum from earlier this afternoon. "So, is he like the boss of us?" Mila said. "B***h, he f*****g owns us. " Lana expressed.
