Chapter 19: The Great Deletion

311 Words
The launch event for 'Privacy-Pro' was held at a rooftop gala. Aria was in a designer gown, and Julian was in a tuxedo that felt like a straightjacket. There were teleprompters everywhere, telling them exactly what to say about "Digital Freedom." "I can't do it," Julian whispered as they waited behind the curtain. "Aria, look at the script. It says I fell in love with you because of your 'Leadership Skills.' It doesn't mention the library or the rain or the way you look when you're actually angry." Aria looked at the five-million-dollar check sitting on the podium. Then she looked at Julian. "They want the 'Glitch,' Julian. But they don't realize that a glitch can't be bought. It can only be triggered." They stepped out onto the stage. Thousands of cameras flashed. Sarah was in the front row, nodding encouragingly. "We have a statement," Aria said into the microphone, ignoring the teleprompter. "Omni-Tech wants to sell you 'Privacy.' But they tried to buy ours first. They tried to turn a real, messy, chaotic love story into a marketing campaign." Julian stepped forward, pulling his tablet out. "So, we’re doing what we do best. We’re crashing the system." With a single tap, Julian didn't launch the app. He launched a "Data-Dump" of the very contract Omni-Tech had tried to make them sign. Every "Fake Date" location and "Scripted Argument" appeared on the giant screens behind them for the whole world to see. "Our love isn't for sale," Aria shouted over the rising murmur of the crowd. "And the 'Glitch' isn't a brand. It’s the truth!" They dropped their microphones in unison—a literal mic drop—and ran for the service elevator. Behind them, the five-million-dollar deal went up in digital smoke, but as they hit the street level and started sprinting through the city, they had never felt richer.
