CHAPTER TWO

1760 Words
I took a deep breath. I'm sure I misheard. There's no way the CEO of this company is interested in me being his secretary. Why? What has made me interesting to him. I tried to check my brain for instances where I had done something exceptional for the CEO to notice me and I came up with nothing. “He's only here for today which is why I asked you to see me before you left. He'd like for you to meet with him now” Mr Davis continued. He gave me directions to the CEO’s office and sent me on my way. Once I got to the front of the office, I summoned courage and knocked. The voice that asked me to come in was deep and sent shivers of fear down my spine already. As I opened the door, the face I was greeted with was one that sent me into a state of mild shock although I recovered quite quickly. “Oh, hell to the f*****g no”. ZADE It was cute to hear him cuss. And it was really funny when I saw his reaction. I had known it would be along the lines of that but I needed some form of amusement and he seemed like a good provider of that. When I saw him in the elevator earlier, I was in a foul mood already and couldn’t resist throwing jabs at him. It surprised and intrigued me that he didn’t respond to me. I knew he didn’t know who I was which would have been obvious if he had, and that was refreshing. I had a peak at the company issued identity card around his neck and memorized the name. It didn’t take too long to find out who he was, how long he’s been working here and who he was working under. It’s not surprising that he started work here today, since I obviously haven’t seen him before and I take pride in knowing my staff. Also, his face is one I don’t think I can forget quite easily if I had met him before. I had to get Davis to send him up to me. I know he has a temper on him but I want to be able to personally see it in action. It took a lot of professionalism for him not to respond back to my taunts even though I can see it in his eyes that he wanted to. “Have a seat, Mr Maurice” I gestured to the chair in front of me and watched as he did everything except what I said. “You’re the CEO?” I don’t know if I should term his expression as annoyance or disgust but it could easily be a bit of both. “Why did you say that like you’re surprised someone like me could be the boss” I asked, an eyebrow c****d, something I’ve learnt to do overtime. It intimidates people but he doesn’t seem to be intimidated by me. If anything, he’s even more annoyed now. Good. “I knew CEOs can be rude, I didn’t know they are majorly ass-” I interrupted him. “I would not finish that sentence if I were you. I think you would you like to keep it in mind that I am still your most superior boss and getting fired after only your first day at your new job wouldn’t really help your prospects in getting a new one. That and the fact that I know your full name and a call could mean you’re cancelled everywhere, until I say otherwise” If he was annoyed before, he’s definitely raging now. “You’re threatening me? Because you’re rich and affluent, you think that gives you the right to threaten me? You know what? I don’t care. You can make your calls. I’ll do very well on my own, Mr Asshole” He made for the door and I chuckled. Yeah, I like this one. “I have an offer for you” That made him pause on the way to the door and I’m somewhat thankful for the fact that the space between my desk and the door was long enough for me to get the words out. It’d hurt my ego if he slammed the door in the midst of my sentence. He stood there for a second before turning to me with a smile that was out of place with his emotions. “I would very much like for you to shove your offer up your rigid asshole. I want to say more, but I’d probably end up censored” His words made me laugh but I kept it in as much as possible although one could probably hear the laughter in my voice. “Before you make a decision that would probably be a huge mistake, why don’t you listen to the offer first. You get to walk if it doesn’t work for you and you can continue your job here, undisturbed. But, I think you’d like it. I know of your financial and living situations. Just think of this as me doing my good deed of the year” “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I was a goddamn charity case for you to take pity on. Unless I asked for it, which I don’t recall doing, I don’t need your help. So, once more, shove it”. He started to walk away again. “Four times your current pay, free accommodation, all expenses paid trips and transportation. What do you say?” I watched as the words took effect. I knew he was going to have to listen to the offer. Four times his current pay without taxes is something that was truly enticing. The free accommodation and transportation would also mean he doesn’t have to pay for those and would only need to pay for basic necessities. Saving up his money ensures that he would be set for life if he’s not a lavish spender. I can see the wheels turning in his head and he did the math. He turned back, curious. “And this would be in exchange for what? My soul? Are you the devil? It must be even worse than I thought then” He sure has a mouth on him. “No. All you have to do is be my secretary” I thought about it for a moment. “No, scratch that. My personal assistant. I’d need you at hand every hour of the day, including for travels and all you have to do is plan my schedules, meetings and little stuff like that” I actually have other plans in mind but I wouldn’t want to freak him out by telling him about those. It’s best to wait for him to get comfortable enough with me. “That’s it? No trafficking? No drug pushing? Just an assistant and I get what you mentioned?” I know my offer is a bit too high for the position I offered him but I need him to accept it. It would make things a lot easier. “Do I look like I need the money from drug pushing? Or trafficking?” I am actually a little bit offended by that. “You can never tell” He finally took the seat and leaned forward. “So, how’s it going to be? I need a written contract that states this and you and I are going to sign beforehand because I will not be getting myself into slavery only not to get paid for it after. This time, I actually laughed. “Fine. You’ll get your contract. Does this mean you’d be accepting to be my assistant?” He murmured his response and I has to really listen to make out his words. Although the not so audible parts seemed like he was cussing at me. I dialed the company’s lawyer and asked him to draft out a contract. I gave him the details and hung up. There was nothing left to do than to wait for him. “Once this is signed, you’re going to go with the driver to go pack your bags and he’d take you to the apartment” I informed him. “Hold on, now? Like today? I don’t even get like two days to finish up loose ends or something like that?” I know for sure he doesn’t have “loose ends or something like that” “Is there someplace else you’d rather be than at work? Are you sure you’re going to be serious about this? My work is important and I expect my staff to be well prepared and take things seriously” My gaze must have contained more heat than I planned for because he visibly shrunk before me and I almost felt sorry for him until he hardened back into his previous self again. “Okay” was all he said and the office was quiet until the silence was thankfully broken by a knock on the door. After getting an affirmative response, the lawyer walked in with two sets of papers and placed them before me. Speed and efficiency is what I pay my staff for and I’m glad it’s paying off. “Mr Maurice, please, take your time in perusing this contract. Any questions can be directed to either me or the lawyer before you sign. I wouldn’t like for us to have a misunderstanding before work begins” He didn’t even bother to look at me. He opened the file and read through the contract. I’m glad he didn’t just glance through like most people would do, but actually go through every paragraph. It solidified that I made the right choice picking him. Convinced with what he had read, I watched him sign both contracts and hand it over to the lawyer who handed one to me and returned the other to Lucas. When we round up, the lawyer left and Lucas stood up to leave. “The driver would be right outside. I already sent him your name so all you have to do is show him your id and tell him where to go” He nodded and headed to the door. I waited till he was right by it and stopped him. “Oh, and Lucas?” I waited a beat for him to turn around to face me. “You will address me as Mr Daniels and you will do so with utmost respect”.
