Chapter 1 Infidelity

806 Words
After three years abroad, my best friend is pregnant with my fiancé's child, and they've gone public on Twitter. Everyone expected me to break down, but quite the opposite happened. I laughed three times and immediately married his uncle. But on our wedding night, the jerk suddenly panicked. "Dana, I was wrong; you can't treat me like this!" His uncle promptly kicked him in the rear, exclaiming, "Get out! Who gave you the right to speak to your Aunt Dana like that?" ***** 01 When I saw Isla Hughes and Mason Brooks trending on Twitter for their kiss, I felt completely shattered. I couldn't believe that the boy I had grown up with—my childhood sweetheart, the one with whom I made promises—was now with my best friend. When I returned to Sirionburg, they were there at the airport to pick me up together. It was then that I learned Isla, whom Mason had always disliked, had somehow become his secretary. I was genuinely happy for Isla; after all, getting into the Brooks family company was no easy feat. We laughed as we left the airport, but just as we were getting into the car, a vehicle sped past me. I didn't have time to react and ended up twisting my ankle and scraping my calf, the pain almost bringing me to tears. But when I turned my head, I saw Mason holding Isla closely, checking on her. "Isla, are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?" That moment left me stunned. I had no idea what had transpired between them during my forced absence, but I felt utterly uneasy. Later that evening, Mason drove me home. He pinned me to the bed, and just as the atmosphere heated up, he was abruptly interrupted by a phone call. That was when I truly grasped the feelings I had been experiencing earlier. I recognized the number—it was Isla's. At that moment, my heart felt as though it had been suddenly squeezed. I thought, perhaps this time, Mason was about to betray the vows we had made. But those childhood promises were etched too deeply in my heart, and I couldn't let go. I still remember the day I turned eight when my family suddenly got a sister. Mom made me give my room to her and even accused me of ruining her dress and pushing her into the water on my birthday. No one in the family believed me; they all blamed me. The only one who held my hand and told me not to cry was Mason. He said he would always believe in me. From then on, I became Mason's shadow. Every night he was punished by his mother, and I was there with him. I did many reckless things just to be close to him. Everyone said I loved him to death, and even when I was kidn*pped and almost died in the wilderness, he was the only one on my mind. Without that belief, I might not have escaped those woods. Then I was sent abroad. But just three years later, I returned to find Theodore who once held my heart now in someone else's, and that someone was my best friend. Isla became my best friend because I supported her during school. Little did I know I was raising a backstabber. Honestly, it felt unfair. Why should someone else reap the rewards of what I had sown? So even when I noticed Mason's strange behavior, I didn't confront him directly. I wanted to see just how long he would continue to deceive me. For months, we played this game of pretending to be oblivious. Then two days ago, I saw Mason at his apartment, passionately kissing Isla against his car. That was the moment I decided enough was enough. Ironically, someone captured that scene and posted it online. Given Mason's status as the Brooks family heir, the video went viral instantly. At that point, I could no longer pretend. Even though I braced myself for Mason's confession, my heart twisted painfully when he finally came clean. His patronizing tone felt like a hand from hell ripping through my insides. He said, "Dana, I didn't want to hide this from you. I've fallen for Isla, and she's pregnant. I need to take responsibility, but you know the Brooks family won't acknowledge her, so don't worry; I'll still marry you." I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. So the child would call me "Mom," while Mason loved Isla? What was I to him—a fallback option? A fool supporting his mistress? At that moment, I realized those childhood vows meant nothing. I had always dreamed of marrying Mason, but sharing a husband with someone else? That was simply unacceptable. I felt disgusted and broke up with him on the spot.
