Two orange cats purred by Dean’s legs. Allie had mentioned her allergy to cats the day she moved into the apartment, but he imagined her symptoms to be mild, like sneezing or teary eyes. She coughed then wheezed unintelligible words.      Fear paralyzed Dean. He stroked her curls as if that would make her feel better. But as she became weaker, his brain snapped to the danger. Right in front of his eyes she was dying. He slid his arms around her torso and the back of her knees and carried her toward the garden, when the cats hissed. He tried kicking one of them, making them angrier. Their claws and teeth ready to attack.      “I don’t have time for this.” Dean cursed at the felines as his girlfriend tapped on her chest.      The restless boyfriend shoved the planter that blocked the exit
