Not wanting to be seen by anyone was what prompted Natalie's decision to go into the house through the back door that was leading into the kitchen.
When the yellow taxi she flagged down outside the door pulled up in front of the mansion’s gate, Natalie quietly snuck in through the pedestrian gate that was left open, waved to the security guard who was startled by her presence, and walked with long swift steps on the driveway that had hedges of different varieties of flowers planted at both side.
Fortunately for her, the back door was opened, and the maids were already in the kitchen trying to fix up breakfast. A series of greetings filled the air as she walked in, a dazzled expression on their faces.
She nodded her head in acknowledgment of their greetings before walking out of the kitchen. Feeling a bit easy that she had been able to scale through successfully into the house without being seen by her husband or his mother, Natalie was heading towards the stairs leading to her room when she heard her husband's voice.
She halted underneath the stairs, where she had gotten to, to hear who he was having a conversation with and what it was about.
“You mean she didn't sleep in this house last night, and you are not bothered about it?” She heard Louisa asking.
“Is she surprised now?” Natalie mumbled to herself, referring to the tone of Louisa’s voice.
“What should you have had me do? Start running around the streets of California looking for someone who is old enough to take care of herself?” Aiden questioned back.
“You did something that is not to be heard of, something that can dent your image if it gets out to the public, and you are supposed to find a way to curb that fire that is already brewing so it doesn't burn you, instead of acting like you don't care,” Louisa said.
“How is trying to seek pleasure with someone else outside the wood ornament I am trapped in this house to dent my image?”
“Will you stop speaking like a child and look at the bigger picture here? Or are you that dumb that this plight of yours will be a good juice for the public to sip from if she leaks it?”
“Mum, you worry too much, Natalie wouldn't dare to do such a thing” Aiden answered.
“Oh she definitely will, seeing it as an opportunity to pay back for what we both have made her go through, she wouldn't think twice about making a scandal about you, about us”
“Natalie is just a naive, desperate creature. She is too weak to even chest the heat that would come from starting a scandal. She doesn't have the boldness to stand up against the Salvatore family,” He paused to catch his breath,
“A family that even high caliber members of the society shudder at the mention of the name and dare not raise their faces, do you think a lowlife with a matched family will be able to stand up to us when she fully knows the kind of power we wield?” Aiden asked, and Louisa was mute, staring blankly into space.
She understood the standpoint Aiden was coming from, but with her trying to be realistic about everything, Louisa knew if pushed harder to the wall Natalie was most likely going to try back, and the highest thing they would be able to do is to use their influence to cool down any scandal that arises against them, but they would not be able to completely sweep it out of the public.
And whether they like it or not, people, especially groups they might want to work and connect with later in the future, may refer to it.
“I honestly understand what you are saying, but we can't let our dirty underwear fly into public and then start struggling to wash, we…”
“There is no such thing as struggling to wash it, a snap of a finger can take care of it all” Aiden started cutting Louisa Galway through her sentence.
She chuckled lightly, “Aiden, you have to set your pride aside and apologize to her, that wouldn't change a thing, it would just give us the assurance that we still have her under our grip”
Tired of what she was wearing from the people she keeps on giving her all even when they keep treating her like trash, and even more tired of the fact that her father could not pay back the loan he collected from the Salvatore’s when he was a driver for the family and ended up using her as the mode of payment, Natalie got fed up and walked out of the position she was crouched in under the stairs.
Silence fell on them as they watched her alight the stairs, probably wondering where she came out from in their kind.
“Natalie, we were just getting worried about your whereabouts” Louisa was the first to voice out. “Where have you been?” She asked.
“I understand yesterday was not a good day for you, but that doesn't mean you should just walk out of the house without telling anyone about where you are headed” Louisa continues without waiting for Natalie to answer her question.
“First she was standing up for me, wanting Her son to apologize for what he had done, although it was for a selfish reason, and now she is here acting all nice to my face,” Natalie said in her head while she just mopped at Louisa in reality.
“I am fine now” Natalie murmured without meaning it because that wasn't the reply she wanted to give, she actually wanted to pour out abuses and curse words, and tell them to their faces that she isn’t a naive and weak girl like they think she is, but her head could out form up the sentences and her tongue wouldn't let it out.
“I have always known you to be a strong woman” Louisa replied, flashing a warm smile at her, “Do you know what?” She went on to ask and Natalie shared her head in response, “I will be hosting a family dinner at my house over the weekend and I would love you to come over along with Aiden”.
“That is fine by me” Natalie replied.
“Take it as Aiden making up for his misbehavior, and don't forget to pull up in your nicest attire as the whole family would be present,” Louisa said and tapped her shoulders before walking away, leaving Aiden and Natalie behind to stare at each other like arch enemies.
