I hadn’t even reached the door when I saw my mother coming out to meet me.
That had never happened.
And she was sober.
Even wearing makeup.
What the hell was going on?
“Sweetheart,” she said, grabbing my arms. “Your father is here.”

Like I’d just been shot straight through the heart.
It took me a few seconds to process what I had just heard.
