Callie’s POV Asher’s question didn’t disappear the next day. It stayed there. Sitting between us. Invisible. Uncomfortable. Waiting. The sun had finally come out after nearly a week of rain, and the forests gradually began to open as we continued north. The mountains looked different here. Older. Wilder. As if we were entering a region the rest of the world had forgotten. No one talked much that morning. Aurek studied one of his maps. Jonas took notes in an old notebook. Asher drove. And I watched the landscape pass by through the window. Trying not to think. Failing completely. Because the closer we got to the White City, the more I felt like everyone was beginning to look at me the same way. Not them. Not exactly. The world. The visions. The guardians. The First.
