/Kelvin POV/
Today Friday, I got to the club quite early, actually, that was my usual time to arrive at the bar after a 30min walk from the apartment. All through my walk, my thoughts were on Dexter, I’m beginning to get a bit worried. It is getting close to forty eight hours and I haven’t gotten a call from him, not even a text. For about eight months that we’ve been together, he has never cut communication for so long, all my effort to contact him has yielded no positive result, though kelvin has never given me any reason to be worried about his movement, he could go on a trip to Mexico on Monday morning and by evening he will call to say he is in Las-Vegas. But this time, a simple I won’t be home tonight after returning from a long trip and its already two nights and counting.
“Hello boss Kelvin” Loren greeted in his usual enthusiastic manner, he’s a very good man, he is in his first year in college, he said he doesn’t want the student loan. He’s getting support from his family but also need some little jobs to keep up with budgets.
“What’s up man” I responded as I walked pass him after stretching my left hand towards him for a fist bum.
“Oh! Your face lacks that glow it had on yesterday, this is sign of not getting any fun” he said sarcastically having an expression of pity on his face.
“You crazy man” I turned my face towards him with a scoff as I continued straight to the back where the office is, I had forgotten to take the tuxedo to the house the previous night again.
“It is the truth boss, I’m fully rooting for you and I don’t want your life to continue this way” he screamed behind me as I disappeared through the door.
I got to the office removed my jacket and was left with just a grey jacket, I brought the tuxedo and hung it close to my jacket. I shouldn’t forget it this time. And straight again my thoughts went to Dexter, all my calls went straight to voicemail and I was tired of dropping him that. So I just decided to go straight to the bar to set up my counter for the night.
Immediately I came out of the door that exited from the back to the bar, I found Loren speaking to man, he was putting on a grey coat on top of a complete well ironed black suit. He was an afro American, with large dark pink lips and his hair waves were sparkling.
“That’s my boss, his in charge” Loren had declared as he gestured towards me with his hands.
I’m agent drake” he introduced himself working towards me with his badge held high in the air with his left hands.
“Alright agent Drake, what can we do for you?” I asked politely with my both hands on the car counter and my full body resting on it.
“Nothing much Mr Adams” he replied as he helped himself with one of the high stools.
“Please let me get you something to drink” I pleaded and quickly took a double rock glass from the counter below as I haven’t set up for the day.
“What will you like to have Mr Agent” I asked as I turned to face the shelf of drinks.
“Anything is good for me, just impress a brother” his responds was very friendly and direct.
I didn’t waste time, I quickly grabbed the bottle of a non-alcoholic drink and poured him a glass. I pushed it to him before I decided to also have a drink myself, I bent to get another glass from the same place I got the earlier one, poured myself same drink and grabbed a stool that’s hardly been used from the far end of the counter to sit.
“So, Agent Drake, what can we do for you?” I asked one more time, after my first sip from the glass.
“From the information I have, this club is owned by one Dexter Xander, but on getting here, the guy over there confirmed to me that, you Mr Adams is in charge” he brought out a small pocket book and a well sharpened pencil with a cover from the side inner chest pocket of his coat. The pencil caught my attention as it was both old fashioned and also the cover made it looked modern.
“Well! Yes, Dexter is my friend and my boss also, he owned this place” I took another sip out of anxiety to hear the reason why he’s here.
“Well, there was a red flag on the clubs account, the bank noticed some unrealistic inflations in the cash you deposited over the couple of months” he stated as he finally stopped inscribing in his little book and look straight into my eyes looking for expressions. I might be timid when it comes to women and publicity, but I don’t fringe easily in the face of intimidation or fear.
“Well, I don’t know what to say about that, all I do is go in and deposit the cash from a night before on my way to the club the next day, sometimes I leave it three days or four days before I go. For instance I haven’t been able to go for like three days now”.
“Okay, you mean to say, you are the one fully in charge of all account and book keepings?” he questioned still looking straight in my eyes, waiting for any suspicious expression, but I wasn’t giving him the pleasure of getting any.
“Yes sir, I am, in fact my friend Dexter hardly ever look into the books, he only drops in some nights and …” I wanted to mention the cash Dexter usually come drop at the bar but I stopped for a second, as it occurred to me that I never asked Dexter what the source of those extra cash he was bringing to the club to be deposited alongside the clubs earnings.
“…Have a few drinks and also see how we manage our services to the customers”. I quickly added as I tried to make sure I bring no suspicion unto my self with the little pause I just had in my speech.
“Can I take a look at your account book, if you don’t mind please?” he suggested pocketing back his book and pencil.
“Well, if it was any other person, I wouldn’t have mind, but the dude with a badge I mind a little so I will like to get permission from my boss first before I let you do that except maybe you got a subpoena there with you” I quickly replied him trying to have a friendly smile on my face as I went for the last sip from my cup.
“No, have got nothing like that here with me, but if investigation requires me to look into those books, I’ll be bringing one here immediately” he had said as he climbed down from the stool arranging his coat back in order.
“I will gladly obliged whenever you do that” I responded with an even brighter smile as I am now in a standing position.
“Thank you for your cooperation and also the hospitality Mr Adam” he stretched out his hands to me.
“Anytime agent” I stretched out my hand to receive his in a tight grip masculine handshake.
“I kind of wonder how you got to know my last name, are you guys so free to so much information about the public?” I questioned as we release our hands from the tight grip.
“Yes we have access to so many information about the public, more than you can even imagine, but I actually got your name from the bank tellers as the depositor of those funds and also that guy mentioned you first name as Kelvin, so a wide guess, I was sure you’re the one” he turned and started moving towards the exit. He greeted Loren on his way out and I just watched.
Immediately he stepped out of the club, I called on to Loren to set up my bar for me as I rushed quickly into the back. I got into the office and opened the account book, all those cash brought in by Dexter, were not accounted for in the account books and there I knew there I knew there will be problem the next time that agent guy comes back her. The only way we won’t be having any issue is If Dexter could prove and account for the source of those cash to be legit.
Either way, I am in no problem, as long as I can prove that I only deposit cash for my boss following his order. I picked up my phone and tried dialing Dexter again but it was still same result, straight to voicemail. I decided to go home with the account book and study it well with the hope that Dexter will be coming home tonight.
