"You're doing it again," Jinx called out to his retreating back.
Caleb stopped. He didn't turn around.
"Doing what?"
"Pretending you have a plan," Jinx said, her voice teasing. "You walked away from me like a cool action hero, but where are you actually going? A motel? They ask for ID. A park bench? The Wolves will smell you in ten minutes."
Caleb gritted his teeth. She was right. He had nowhere to go.
He turned slowly. "What do you want, Jinx?"
"I want to help you," Jinx said, twirling a lollipop. "And I want to annoy the Wolf King. It's a win-win."
She walked over to Aoki, who had finished briefing the Enforcers.
"Hey, Tree-Man! Our stray is getting cold feet."
Aoki looked up, his expression unreadable. "The situation has escalated. The appearance of a Magic Beast inside the city limits... it’s not just a breach. It’s a message."
He walked over to Caleb, towering over him.
"That rat didn't wander in," Aoki said. "It was released. Someone smuggled a D-Class monster into a high school to flush you out."
"To flush me out?" Caleb frowned. "Who?"
"The Wolf Tribes suspect the stolen blood is here, but they don't know who has it," Aoki explained. "So they created chaos. They knew the carrier—you—would either transform to defend yourself or run, revealing your signature."
"And you revealed yourself," Jinx added, popping her gum. "You ran to the dead end. You used your Wolf Arm. The scouts saw the energy spike."
Caleb felt a pit open in his stomach. "So they know."
"They suspect," Aoki corrected. "But now, the hunt begins in earnest."
Caleb looked at the school, at the students huddled in blankets. He had brought this here. His survival had endangered everyone.
"So, what's the play?" Caleb asked, crossing his arms. "You want me to join the Special Group so you can use me as bait?"
"Smart kid," Jinx grinned. "Yes. We protect you. You lure them out. We crush them. Simple."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then you die in an alley tonight," Aoki said bluntly. "And the Wolves take your blood back."
It wasn't a threat. It was a statement of fact.
Caleb looked at Jinx. She winked.
"Fine," Caleb exhaled, feeling the weight of the decision settle on his shoulders. "I'm in. But I have conditions."
"Conditions?" Jinx laughed. "You're homeless and hunted, and you're making demands?"
"Condition one: My identity stays secret. No one knows I'm Caleb Vance."
"Done," Aoki nodded. "Standard protocol for operatives."
"Condition two: I get paid. In advance."
Jinx whistled. "Mercenary. I like it."
"And condition three," Caleb said, his voice hardening. "If we find the people who released that rat in my school... I get to kill them."
Aoki stared at him for a long moment. Then, he nodded. "Acceptable."
Two Hours Later - The Classroom
The school administration, in a desperate attempt to restore normalcy, announced that classes would resume the next day. The "gas leak" (the cover story for the monster attack) had been contained.
Caleb sat in the empty classroom. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the desks.
The door creaked open.
"Caleb?"
It was the homeroom teacher, Mr. Henderson. He looked frazzled.
"Oh, you're still here. Good." Henderson wiped his glasses. "Listen, there’s been a... development. With the chaos today, the transfer student paperwork got pushed through quickly."
"Transfer student?" Caleb asked.
"Yes. A new student is joining your class tomorrow."
Mr. Henderson stepped aside.
A boy walked in.
He was tall, with broad shoulders and wild, unkempt hair that looked like a lion’s mane. He wore the school uniform, but it looked ridiculous on him, straining against his muscles.
But it was his eyes that made Caleb freeze.
They were blue. Ice blue.
The boy scanned the room, his gaze landing on Caleb. He sniffed the air, a subtle twitch of his nose.
He smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile. It was the smile of a predator recognizing another predator.
"Class, this is Aios," Mr. Henderson introduced. "Please make him feel welcome."
Aios walked down the aisle, ignoring the empty desks. He stopped right in front of Caleb.
"You smell interesting," Aios whispered, his voice a low rumble. "Like a wolf... but dead."
Caleb didn't flinch. He looked up, meeting those icy eyes with his own contact-lens-covered red ones.
"And you smell like wet dog," Caleb replied calmly.
Aios blinked. Then, he threw his head back and laughed—a booming, joyous sound.
"I like this one!" Aios slammed his hand on the desk next to Caleb. "I'm sitting here."
He sat down, sprawling his legs out.
"I'm Aios," he said, extending a hand. "Wolf King's son. Bastard prince. Trouble magnet."
Caleb looked at the hand. This was the source of the blood in his veins. This was the guy everyone was looking for. And he was sitting right next to him.
"Caleb," he replied, shaking the hand. "Just a guy trying to graduate."
"We'll see about that," Aios grinned. "School just got a lot more interesting."
Across the street, in the surveillance room, Jinx watched the feed.
"They just shook hands," she whispered, stunned. "The thief and the victim. The Hybrid and the Prince."
"This is going to be explosive," Aoki muttered.
"No," Jinx smiled, popping a fresh piece of gum. "This is going to be legendary."
